I have a 75 gallon tank with a marineland emeperor 400 which should be efficient for that size tank, I was thinking about buying the emperor 280 as a secondary filter? I figure the more filtration the better, but would this be necessary? Or would I just be wasting my money?

Hello sum...

If you have a filter system that turns over 4 times the volume of the tank in gallons every hour (gph) and it's in good working condition, then there's no reason to add to it. It's good to also follow an aggressive weekly water change routine to ensure clean water conditions for the fish and plants, but this is all that needs to be done.

I am a huge fan of multiple filters. IMO, it is worth it for the redundancy alone. It doesn't take much to cause an HOB failure. Coming home to a tank full of dead fish is no fun.

It is also useful to minimize the impact of a filter cleaning. You can clean them on alternating schedules.
