Sponge v Canister

I have a 10 gallon tank, well planted with 4 XRay Tetras, 3 pygmy Cory's, a emerald Cory, a bb puffer, and a albino brushy nose pleco. I currently have a drop in canister filter. I want to switch to a sponge filter. I would like to start a sponge filter, allow it to become cycled and then remove my canister. Any tips? Concerns?
