Sump a fluval profile 1000

As discussed in my other thread, i think the best option is to scrap the canister filter and go for a small (maybe 10g) sump. Firstly, can a sump be done without a wier or overflow? The tank is drilled and comes with a intake strainer attachment and a return attachment which is normally used with the canister. Could i use these attachments to feed water into the sump and return through? Am confused with the whole sump thing, i know it is going to be good for equipment, but dose any media go into it?
