Supreme Skilter 250 Aquarium Filter & Protein Skimmer

Can anyone vouch for this Filter/Skimmer? I have the opportunity to purchase one at a discount, and would like to know if it is worth it to spend the money. I am currently using a Whisper 60 on my 55g, but I'm assuming this "starter" filter will not last very long if I plan to change my FOWLR tank to a reef tank someday.

Can I use the Supreme Skilter 250 alone and do away with my Whisper? I am just finishing the cycling of my tank; is it ideal to switch hardware right before adding fish?
