So I never know exactly where I should be when checking these colours, especially on Nitrate tests.

I get very different colour when measuring under ambient light, when shining a torch at it, when standing with my back to a window, when holding a piece of white paper behind it.... Ect..

So where do you go to check this stuff?

Or do tests on brand new made up water and take a phot of the colour. And compare it to that?

I would suggest day light or a day light balanced light bulb is your best bet. Just be consistent about it. That's why I went with Hanna testers especially for phosphates where your measuring down to .01ppm.

Bright, white light with a bit of white paper behind tube. Oh, and I hold the colour chart upside down - no idea why that helps but works for me. Then a family meeting lol.
