what could be making the noise?

I have a magnoum 350 that I got used with my tank and it is just really noisy. I don't know much about it I have bio rings in the basket that said it was for charcole because I did not want charcole then I have filter floss around the outside of the basket. I have tryed rearanging stuff. I have tryed to clean it best i can. Any suggestions would be great.

check the impeller for wear...does it turn smoothly????...if not replace

Is it a rattling noise, or a gurgling noise? If rattling, then it's probably the impeller as noted previously. If it's gurgling, did you make sure to fill it completely full of water before closing the top? It will purge the air out on its own, but the more air you remove to start with, the better it will be.

no it is a rattling noise or even a grinding noise.

You should be able to see wear and tare on the impellor. That is the piece that spins around with the magnate.
