I know i need water testers and meters for a saltwater tank but which one are neccessary and why and what brand do you prefer?

For a fish only tank, you should have at least a nitrate and pH test kit.
For a reef tank, you should have both the above plus calcium, alkalinity, magnesium and phosphate.
I use Salifert test kits. They are a little more expensive than some others, but they are extremely accurate and easy to use/read.

i use API,i recomend getting a "master kit" as it has nitrate, nitrite, ph,alk, and amonia all in one, it's easy to use IO also has one but it pwder and a bit harder to use but both seem to be acurate (when check at lfs they give same readings)if running a reef get a phosphate tester as well these sold seperately
