For fish-only it is sumps all the way! But canisters for CO2 injected planted tanks, gas exchange is bad for CO2 injection.. JMO though..

Seeing as I am on a tight budget, I really like Aqua Clear HOB filters. You can't beat the price for that flow rate. They have very customizable media too.

I voted for canister filter because it is probably best overall in regards to performance (especially for planted tanks that use CO2). HOB are probably the most bang for the buck. I use spong filters for smaller tanks because they are inexpensive and easy to maintain.
