Thanks for all the suggestions guys! I've been really busy lately so I haven't been able to get back on here to update. So I wanted everyone to know that everything is up and running fine. The overflow is working properly too, I just covered the connections with leftover silicone I had lying around to be safe.

The only thing that I could see changing about this setup is that it is really low-flow, since the overflow is basically miniaturized it can't handle higher pump outputs. But for my uses it is just fine.

If anyone would also like to try and make a clear overflow for the aesthetics as well, I would suggest finding a larger diameter hose so it can handle higher flows.
