Finally took some pics of my 55g planted with homemade stand.

Gold fish and koi will turn the gravel over. If a plant is there, then it gets dug up. I believe they are also vegetarians. Could cause problems. But if you dont care then they are fun to have. I had two koi given to me by rescue and I put them in a 180g tank I had and they were 15 inches long before I had my pond ready.
 
i have gold fish in a planted tank and have no problems. i brought plants that are rooted in little teracotta pots that you can bury, and the roots still grow through the bottom. i have found this very effective in keeping the plants planted!

I might need to try that cause of a pain in the butt Chinese Algae Eater I have. I never thought of that.

BTW great looking stand, makes me wish I had a garage I could turn into a wood working shop.
