Boy oh boy Have I learned a lot in the past few months.
I was serious in this hobby a fear years back breeding Bettas. So I got interested again and decided I'd try freshwater Angel fish. Well I've learned a lot. So here's my mistakes for those interested in starting
1. Be Patient! I can't stress this enough.
2. Make sure your tank(s) are properly cycled (patience again)
3. Try to buy locally. Shipping is stressful for fish and it's kind of a crapshoot on the health too.
4. You're going to need at LEAST 4 tanks
5. Sponge filters are the best
6. Try to start with a group of 6 juveniles.
7. Make your own breeding slate using PVC and a suction cup
8. Buy a decent air pump from the get go.
9. If you don't have skills to build tank stands buy the cheap double ones

10. Drip acclimate your new fish.
11. If you see a fish looking ill quarantine it immediately
That's the big mistakes I made.
Now some advice.
1. Read the thread titled "wigglers at last" It's so full of good information.
2. Avoid certain "super duper fish foods" One brand in particular killed several of my fish due to bloating issues.
3. Feed fry brine shrimp and juveniles a mix of things including decapsulated brine shrimp eggs. I posted a research study showing how DAC helped tremendously with growth
4. Watch all the videos you can on you tube. There's many methods that people use to breed these fish.
5. Read, Read, READ.
