How to delete private messages

Is there a way to delete my private messages? It says I can't send any more unless clear out some space but I'm unable to do delete anything.

What gives?

If using the mobile app, go to Messages > Inbox (or Sent). Swipe message to the left and click on the Trashcan icon.
