"Does a disease have your tank stuck in a rut?"

You should consider changing that description.

The dictionary tells me that "rut" means:

boring routine, humdrum existence, habit

I don't think anyone makes a habit of having a disease in their aquariums.

Of course no one wants to make a habit of having a disease in the tank. But unfortunately there seem to be times when an ich outbreak, algae problems, etc., may get the best of us

I'm just saying that the phrase "in a rut" means that it's the normal, everyday, boring, routine. A disease can't have you stuck in a rut, or your fish would all be dead already. A sudden onslaught of disease brings you out of your rut, albiet in a bad way.

I think the meaning of the term in this context is "can't solve your disease problem?" As in, you are temporarily "in a rut". Rut when used in terms of our lives can mean a long and drawn our boredom or anxiety. I think we can look at diseases in our tanks as a temporary rut, but that is just my opinion.

Just out of curiosity, what would you figure would be a better word instead of rut?

"Does a disease have your aquatic friends feeling icky?"

"Has a disease snuck into your water world?"

"Aquarium under the weather?"

"Fishy friends infected?"

... and others.
