Just setting up again after a couple of years. Just moved out to Portland, OR.
We have TONS of lava rock out here, Mt. St. Helens and all.. I bought lava sand from a supplier out here. After discussing with a guy at The Wet Spot, I decided to give it a try. I did fluorite in my last planted tank and learned my lesson about rinsing first, that's for sure. The lava sand is sitting outside in my sump right now. The rinsing necessary is pretty extreme. I'm certainly nowhere near being against it yet, but just an FYI I guess. Planning on that substrate for the plants in my recently acquired 94, and then topping with pea gravel, some white sand for the pathway heading "out" the back of my tank, Amano-style. Let me know what you find out about the lava sand. So far, it sure needs a lot of rinsing!
