Hi Becca, Thanks a lot and sorry for the delay in replying. I didn't see it and have been swamped at work.

The two perspectives on this are interesting. One camp says no, and another says if it has been waterlogged and no longer smells, it is fine especially if you have good filtration. AH!! I talked with a few people who have red cedar and none of them have had any problems. I think I am going to set up a dummy tank with a few gold fish and danios and put it there and let them play canary in a coal mine.
I will let you know what I discover.

    Thanks a lot.

Hi, Read your article on natural decor. Great piece. I have a chance to buy a couple great red cedar pieces for a fresh water tank. The seller says they are really old, no sap, no smell, and have been submerged for years and years. Many say no problem at all with old cedar in tanks. Please advise. Thank you. Ted

I really appreciated the effort. It usually takes awhile for java moss to settle in and grow but once it does, you have a friend for life if you know what I mean. Do you ever give your pleco fresh veggies like cukes or zuccini? Sometimes that will stop plecos from munching plants. Or he might just be after food and gunk that gets trapped in the moss.

Holy Cow! Has it really been this long since I came here? Yes, it is working great and it was a real life saver. How is the java moss working out for you? It's been long enough it should have started growing by now. Of course, I always have the fear it didn't work out...

8000k full spectrum bulb will be fine to get you started. i grew plants with a 10,000k and 12000k bulb for over a year and they did fine. i am currently growing plants in 75g with only 60watts t12 0on it. stick to very low light plants. java fern, jungle vals, crypts, java moss, maybe anacharis and hornwort.
