Hi Eco, enjoyed reading your blog. I'm about to cycle a new 1200 US gallon freshwater aquarium. The dimensions are 20'L x 47"H x 28"D I need to have this aquarium stock with fish within a month. But don't want to add any fish before the cycle is completed. What is the best way to cycle this tank? It has a dual sump filtration system. Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Hi Eco. Sorry to bother you with another fishless cycle question but I am a little bit stuck. I have been following your guide step by step and everything has been moving pretty quickly. I'll give you a bit of background, 180l tank, medium planting, 10hrs lighting, dosed with liquid co2, 2 x airstones, 2 x filter/pumps, used filter medium from a friends tank. I think I'm on the verge of the first water change but not quite sure. Started the cycle last Saturday. Nitrites started showing pretty quickly, they have risen above what my jbl test set can show (above 1ppm) Nitrates raised to approx 200ppm as per jbl test set. This is not off the scale but very close to, has sat at this level for two days. My question is are the plants using the nitrates up therefore the levels aren't rising any further, would I be wise to do my 50% water ghange now or wait a bit longer? Any help you could give a complete noob would be most appreciated. Many Thanks.

Hey, was just wondering if your could answer a quick question? I'm doing a fishless cycle, and i believe its going well.. I'm at the stage where my ammonia is reducing to about 0.25 ppm, and my nitrites have shot up to about 5.00ppm, however my nitrAtes are 40ppm, which is the same as my tapwater, so its difficult to tell whether my nitrite is being converted into nitrate. Should I be doing a partial water change at this point? Also, i am using shrimp instead of pure ammonia (which is very difficult to source in the UK) So should I continue adding a bit more shrimp? Thanks

Quick question. When you say ammonia should be at 4ppm is that .04? I'm helping someone set up a 75gal fresh water and never used the fishless cycle method. Also the PH is at 8.0 should we hang some peat in the tank during this process or will it naturally come down? Target would be 7.0 - 7.2. Thank you in advance for your help.

Hey Eco, i read your thread on Fishless Cycling.. I was just curious how it worked with sand, and the fact that i want african cichlids.. They need a higher pH.. If possible PM me, i have a couple more questions too.. Thank you!
