Ok, first off, I highly suggest you invest in the API master kit. (I'm a kid too... I get the $ issue) as for the fish issue, it probably was turning off the airator. Guppies are labyrinth breathers, meaning they breath partially air. I've also found they are extremely sensitive to more heat, so that probably didn't help much either.

What are your water parameters? Have you done anything to the tank recently? What other fish were in there with them? How have the other fish been acting?

i have very little exp. with Guppies ~ I'd rather not have them for anything other than feeder fish for bala shark and pirahna to be honest.... same with platty (though i think platty would be best for turtle feed)
