Gotta a question fellow planted + 24/7 owners would I be able to grow high light to med light plants with a 24" planted + 24/7 on a tank with these demensions
23.6" x 11.8" x 14.2".

Barliman 01-21-2017 04:03 AM

New crypt parva in the 10g has gone into the melt phase. I'm trying Seachem Advance to see if that helps it adjust. This weekend I'll be moving more platy juveniles into that tank to take some of the pressure off the 20-long.

Lol platys multiply like crazy . Trying to find a par chart for the finnex planted + 24/7 24" light no luck so far

nirbhao 01-21-2017 08:23 PM

Cried.

Actually I've just been counting. Every time I walk by, I count.

Added Furan-2 to the big tank. Debating removing the plants so that the salt doesn't kill them.

Went to three different stores looking for Kanaplex.

Nice. Saw finnex came out with a new planted plus 24/7 looks so cool only 3 reviews only Amazon so far but looks nice more red LEDs an it actually turns off at night. See if I can get it next maybe if the wife let's me.

guppygourami 01-22-2017 01:54 AM

Bought Algone and trying it out now (40ppm+ spike of nitrates). 25% water change today. Agh there will be many more soon.

Alan79 01-22-2017 09:21 AM

The long postponed small scale rescape of my betta tank happened today. I've put it off a while because my community tank was messy. I couldn't keep putting it off.

All together I spent about an hour cleaning then about 15 minutes rescaping and re planting. Usually I agonize about my scapes. This one I threw together and I'm pretty happy with.
Afterwards I acclimatized my Betta and added three male endler guppies in with him. So far so good. He's chased them a little but not looked like he's seriously aggressive. Is bed time now though so I'm hoping he didn't hunt them over night.

Ruutah 01-22-2017 09:46 AM

You'll know pretty quickly if you're going to have an issue. Took mine 45 min to hunt and take out 10 neons.

flchamp89 01-22-2017 09:53 AM

Bettas can be funny. Ive had ones fine for months them came adulthood I guess lol. Temperament varies with sex, age, and environment imo.

flchamp89 01-22-2017 12:17 PM

Just did my 30 percent wc. Pitched some floaters. Trim wendtii, rotala, and lilly. Manually attacked some hair/string. BBA getting better with constant bps

Autumnsky 01-22-2017 02:00 PM

Found that my plants that I treated with peroxide and left in the bucket an extra couple days with out more light before adding them to the 12G Edge with no fish, have a bunch of yellowing leaves. The Crypt 's big older leaves are melting only see 2 pretty green leaves on 2 large and one small plant :headbang:

Probably adding a few young Mystery Snails and a few RH in there to help clean up the plants. It is always something. Work & home renovation projects top the schedule of events this week and last, so not too much fun with plant & fish.

Wil be ordering some fish food and maybe substrate. Since I am not getting the PRL shrimp right away maybe will get the Amazonia as it takes up to 6 weeks (hear 5 is kinda a magic number) of ammonia leeching so no inhabitants in there for that long. Plants shouldn't mind though.

I observed them for about an hour and a half before turning the lights out. If he's still chasing them even half heartedly I'll remove them. I don't want to stress them.

I finally got done. Only 1 tank today. She is my baby girl but she can be a pest when she demands attention. When my son moved out for college we adopted her.
The other tank will have to wait. PWC, vacuum and canister clean out. It's only been a month but there was lots of debris on the rock and sand when I first set it up. Everything was looking dusty so I added more poly floss to the canister too. Attachment 293712

AnimalKrazed 01-22-2017 08:52 PM

I did a rescape of my Cube tank today, and mixed up the decorations I have in with Buck. Took out the plastic grass tunnel and replaced it with a small cichlid cave, 5 inches diameter and 7 inches tall I am guesstimating...Looks something like this:
https://smhttp-ssl-30510.nexcesscdn....5/8/7/8726.jpg
I rearranged the gravel I got in there so it slopes from the left side down to the right to add some variation...I've found that Buck likes it when I mess around with even stuff like that.

Oh, I also managed to make a quick trip to a LFS place and grabbed a single portion of Duckweed. I really like the looks of most water plants and I figured what better way to start my entrance into trying that out then with a weed...I'm liking the look of it so far and I think Buck is liking the addition as well. Here is hoping my Black Thumb of Gardening Doom doesn't extend to killing water plants too.

flchamp89 01-22-2017 08:54 PM

I think you can grow duck weed in gas lol.

LOL, you can't ignore that!!!

Spent a small amount of time grabbing a few foods from the lfs during other house errands (and getting my dog his shots). Instead of ordering them, was good timing as I got a bunch of bonus bucks or whatever they call them credited - got all but 2.50 covered - 3 $8 packages for $2.50, including tax. Woot!

Emailed my shrimp guy last night - still waiting for the next message for the exact quality I would be getting or if they would have the special ones in about 6 weeks which is how long Amazonia takes to finish leeching ammonia, give or take a week. :)

Was doing a water change yesterday on the 20-long when I noticed several Malaysian trumpet snails making their way through the eco-complete. From the size of the shells, they'd been there a while, too. Shows how observant I am: I'd *never* noticed them before. :whistle:

flchamp89 01-23-2017 02:48 PM

Probably in eco all day never see them. Im amazed how many I have yet only see handful out and about at any given time. Throw some shrimp food in and ....wow lol

Autumnsky 01-24-2017 11:51 PM

So not too much tank wise:
except the fancy RFA moved three times this week closer to the central light
Refilled for evap
Still drawing a blank in what to do with the 5G Spec V

It is sitting pretty with Garnet sand, a petrified wood stone and a couple of Java fern tree looking DW a smidge of moss and Subwassertang - but not got much style.

Finally the local guy should be picking up the fish for adoption on Sunday.

Edit add on: The special shrimp grade I wanted is not available but maybe in 6-7 weeks, checking on pre-order.

Autumnsky 01-24-2017 11:58 PM

Got a really fast response about the shrimp and they will contact me first!!! In 6-7 weeks! Looks like Amazonia is a possibility now. I have some time now to do a good scape and get some plants growing this weekend I think a couple gel packs maybe.

TMaier 01-25-2017 12:08 AM

7 minute change in perspective lol.

Autumnsky 01-25-2017 12:20 AM

Woot, woot! I really have been waiting around 2 years to keep these shrimp. I am basically waiting for unborn shrimp to be born and grow up! lol!

TMaier 01-25-2017 12:27 AM

They better be awesome!

Autumnsky 01-25-2017 12:46 AM

:) They SHOULD look like this top pic... SSS - They are Pure Red Line, not mixed with Golden Bee Shrimp. PRL can have same grades as CRS that are more widely available. Mine should have red band over the carapace and a spot near their tail.

My tank will be happy soon.

Lol. that last statement though.

AnimalKrazed 01-25-2017 09:29 AM

Well, did another WC last night. Water testing went over well, and I feel pretty good about how clean the tank looks currently. Duckweed is not doing well though, but I am spotting bright green dots of plant material floating in the tank. I think those are seeds, so here's hoping they germinate soon and don't die. Looks like I have some research on a water weed to do today.

Yeah, when I got it from the LFS some of it got submerged in the baggie. I'm assuming since you brought it up that this might have killed those particular duckweeds, right? If so, than the plants that are still alive and green at this point would be the plants that didn't get submerged and will hopefully repopulate my tank right? Thanks for pointing this out. :)

flchamp89 01-25-2017 09:38 AM

Duckweed about as tough as it gets lol. I would be amazed if in 90 days your not trying to give away 50lb sacks of it lol

AnimalKrazed 01-25-2017 09:44 AM

Well, here is hoping. My twin brother and I have both had difficulties trying to raise plants...so long as we are trying to do so indoors. Raise plants outdoors, no problems whatsoever. I've had hibiscus do really well outside, managed to get it to last to late Fall. Try to raise really hardy plants, like my brother's cactus, indoors and somehow the cactus will get too much water and deflate on itself.

Here is hoping that the Duckweed is as successful as everyone thinks it will be. I have a couple of plastic containers, ones I use to hold my WC water as it dechlorinates, set up to hold any excess, if the duckweed is that successful. I have a LFS I am hoping will buy it off me. ;)

Trying to get it leveled, but I jus realised one of the mats is thinner than the other well, now I got order one from Amazon

Autumnsky 01-26-2017 12:11 AM

Looked at Bloody Mary Shrimp today, kinda like them. They could live with my Tangerine Tigers...maybe on them. It is funny that previously I only wanted every kind of Neo shrimp and now it is every Caridina - Can't keep the 2 same kinds together or they cross breed and often the Neo and the Caridina parameters aren't quite the same. Especially not the same for serious high quality breeding tank.

Ordered a 9L bag of Amazonia for the new shrimp tank from Aqua Forest Amano. Less $$ including shipping than the other place I was going to get it from.

Found someone about 2 hours away (one way trip) who is selling some of their stock of PRL and will be checking into this further.

Autumnsky 01-26-2017 12:46 AM

Divided the new bags of foods bought Monday because I dropped about 250-300 little Hikari Sinking wafers on the floor and while picking them up remembered why I usually divide the packs. I am clumsy and drop them. After counting 100 wafers it seemed was only 1/3rd the way finished. :headbang:

What Did You do With Your Tank Today?

Redid this 60 gallon heavily planted tank to include some land plants. Plants do an infinitely better job of taking care of the water chemistry than I can, even with all the weekly water changes I've done over the last decade or so.

Just worked a lot, but not on the tanks.

Checked for tissue culture plants at the lfs, but there was nothing in good condition, last night. Have to try another in the next couple days.

What Did You do With Your Tank Today?

Lost one of my oldest snails in my main tank yesterday. My biological filtration is awesome but did a 40% PWC just in case. Also did an under gravel cleaning in the Biorb. This basically meant taking it apart and putting it back together with about 1/2 of its old cleanest water, plants etc. Those sponges definitely needed a good rinse in to old tank water to get all the old crap out of there.

Did my weekly 25% water change in both tanks and rearranged them. Took my holding female out and put her in a net breeder in my fry tank. Took a 1.25" juvi out of the fry tank and put it in my bigger tank. Now that I rearranged my fry tank all the fry are hanging out together now. My king tiger pleco is pretty pissed I changed the tank around and just lays under the rock. Can't wait to see how many fry i get this time. I only got 10 the last or that's how many made it till now. The newest juvi addition doesn't quite know how to act around the big fish like the one that has been in there for awhile. New is just hiding in the cracks. Hopefully will learn to not be afraid. Tried to get a newer pic of my dominate male but he just chills at the bottom now that his woman is gone. So sorry to hear of the loss, I hate that.

old cleanest water...:lol: Like the thread, You know you are a fish nerd if you know exactly what that means!!!
~~~
Took a few minutes after looking at shrimp colors, to look at a some 3D backgrounds which are available, and some are a life savings to buy!!!
I have one which I got in a trade and never have used just in case it might have got wasp spray overspray as it was in a corner not too far from a huge nest I sprayed and the air grabbed some of it and it took off towards that item. Which is a real bummer as I had planned to use it on the 72G next time I moved it or broke it down.
Some fish are likely going to their new home tomorrow!!
Started keeping my eyes open again for a good price on some Clown Loaches or at least some really healthy looking ones for a reasonable price. I do not want to order them, I would like to see them first.
Okay My Metro 14 came in the mail YAY - 2 liter (glut / & threw out the activator) what is the ratio to water? Anyone can PM me :) THX
Hoping my plants will respond well. Need to dig up the ole root tabs I have stuffed somewhere, (like a squirrel before winter).
Back to the background - I am wondering if it will take up too much space, I'm concerned about getting a perfect fit in an Edge's awkward space. Might just buy the frosted glass coating as a background so I don't have to think about it for awhile, lol. But then there are a couple different options with frostiness. Nothing is simple anymore!!!
Ah, just saw that last night, looks VERY impressive :thumb: Wish I could get a tour...but too far away!
Just worked a lot, but not on the tanks.
Checked for tissue culture plants at the lfs, but there was nothing in good condition, last night. Have to try another in the next couple days.
Now the hard part begins.
What is the new scape plan going to be?
Grant has been a hobbyist for some time now. A big chunk of what he sells is his own stock. He gave up his day job in December to do shrimp full time after cleaning house at the shrimp and scape competitions in Chicago.
Look him up on facebook and you can talk to him in the various shrimp and planted tank groups. He's local to me so we're usually bidding against each other for plants at the club auctions. Good guy, I enjoy being around him and talking fish and shrimp. Very easy to talk to doesn't talk over your head and will explain something if you ask him to.
Sunday maintenance day
30 percent wc, trimmed moss, trimmed remaining parva leaves with bba, picked some gha, replaced zeocarb, tore apart filter and cleaned, pitched bunch of s.minima. Tank is 5 1/2 months now doing pretty good.
Well bummer about the Hydra but the pic of Red in the BiOrb is like a posterchild for the BiOrb tank!
Well King, no shrimp yet about 5-6 more weeks still.
Next Friday we will have a good meeting of the aquarium society, last month was cancelled due to weather. Looking excitedly to the end of the coming week. Will get chance to shop for a few things. House renos have been keeping me pretty tired and using up all my "spare" time.
Making Progress
So the extra fish in the 46G who were getting adopted, finally did! The new care taker will be adding them to a 90G or a 120G. He gave me some Frogbit and some common Cherry shrimp. And THIS...
https://www.aquariumadvice.com/forums...cture70853.jpg
I was about to buy some from a store and I got this instead for no out of pocket $! Very excited about it, especially because There is that big one which will likely be the one I will put into the 12G with the PRL shrimp to tie on some Anubias Nana Petite to disguise the intake. :dance: The thin one is sooooo nice looking. He said it is from a different plant and it will degrade more quickly, but how pretty it is now!
So that is the good news.
The part which has me concerned is the ADA Amazonia substrate which I bought seems to be very soil like. I have read of varying reports of some being very much like granules/little balls and some being very much like mush. It makes me think that it depends on where in the pile your bag got scooped from top middle bottom. I feel like mine is somewhat from the bottom. It looks like the pics of the powder type...hmmm. I have been thinking about what to do with this since it arrived somewhat mushy. It seems moist in the bag with lots of powdery moist silty-ness. I fear if I rinse it all will disappear. Maybe email the seller and ask what's up with the texture.
Still have the Platy 10-12 fish in the 46G and will maybe take them to the mini auction on Friday.
You should email them, dont rinse it . Pretty sure they will send u another bag, or you could at least try it's supposed to be in small pea sizes
More silty for sure. There are lots of little balls, now that it dried out since Saturday eve. I decided to open it and it smells mouldy. The balls are mush, barely touch them and roll them and they turn to dust. Would for sure rinse all away. I thought these were harder like my Up Aqua is, like little clay balls. Still hmmm.
I will email.
Autumnsky 02-01-2017 03:24 AM
Emailed and waiting for a response, said 2 business days to reply. Maybe going to go with Up Aqua or Fluval Shrimp and Plant Strattum.
Put the Cherry Shrimp in the brandy snifter bowl, which used to be planted but recently after being cleaned has just been sitting on a stool, and all but forgotton. Only the floating plants right now, had a stone which needs some Subwssertang on it and a threw in a chunk of DW. Added a glob of moss, shrimp are busy.
Can't seem to find a little, older version, Finnex Stingray light I have somewhere.
Too busy today to dig around for it. Long day tomorrow, so maybe some pwc and misc aquatics on Thursday.
AnimalKrazed 02-01-2017 09:18 AM
I managed to finally do a water change on my tank yesterday after having been gone all weekend and unable to do it the Monday I was back. When I tested the water, the ammonia levels were about 2 or 4 ppm but that was kind of what I was expecting considering I hadn't done it in 4 days and the tank's small size. Nitrite/Nitrate levels were 0 ppm so no real problems there.
Also went to the LFS last night and managed to get there just as they were feeding the Whitetip Reef Shark they have on residence. I was a little confused what the white meat they were feeding it was, till I was informed that it was squid meat. Overall it was pretty cool.
Barliman 02-01-2017 01:05 PM
I put a sponge pre-filter on one of my Aquaclears last week and, while it's been doing a great job (I no longer get the "rising basket effect" from a clogged internal sponge), it itself clogs up within around a week and has to be taken out for a cleaning (such as last night), lest it choke off the water flow. It's annoying enough that I'm considering removing it and looking for other options.
flchamp89 02-01-2017 01:09 PM
Odd. Usually I can go several weeks without messing with the prefilter. It may have to do with micron size.
leviathan2000 02-01-2017 01:13 PM
Went out and bought another 75 gallon tank with stand my whole living room is full of aquariums now I needed something to put my new sharks in and my angel fish
Yeah, I might try a different sponge. It's a heavily planted tank, so there's lots that can clog a filter.
One of the reasons I hate HOB's and got a canister.
Nope. I had HOB's on my 5 and 10 gallon tanks and every week I had to take them apart and aggressively rinse them. Otherwise they would slow/stop/overflow etc. I rinse my canister and media once a month and haven't seen any issues.
Look into a replacement sponge filter, the taller cylindrical type, there are different size fittings in the nice quality ones, they are very much larger ( could be a negative, though cleaning every few days would be a negative as well). If you aren't trying to keep fry or cherry shrimp out of the filter you can check out a more coarse foam pond prefilter sponge as a possibility too.
~~~

The Amazonia balls are drying out in the bag, now that I have it opened to the air. Firmer. The email I received said the soil is normal, mouldy smell and moist mud...is NORMAL. Amazon asked if my question had been resolved and of course NO. I added my 2 questions again.

They original email I received a useful bit of info about how the product will produce/leach ammonia for weeks. Thankfully I already know that and woudln't have killed off my little aqua critters. They went on and on about it with links. But didn't answer if a mouldy smell was normal or the mush silt balls.

I told them if that IS normal they can take it back. Or if they can't answer my questions they can take it back. And that I was disappointed and would share this experience. So we will see what they do about it. MY opinion would be that they replace the bag after smelling it and making sure it isn't mouldy smelling. Earthy and mouldy are two different smells. I wouldn't put that in my PRL Shrimp tank.

So far didn't even get it into water yet/ start leaching the ammonia out, in case they want to take it back. So now will be off schedule about a week or 2 by the time it is all over with. In the big scheme of things, shouldn't let it bother me but I am irritated. Mostly because I feel like I took a leap out to the edge to buy such an expensive substrate, when the other stuff would have been okay. This is from the U.S. sales arm of ADA. 2 more days of waiting for an email.

I got a mesh screen tube for exactly that reason.

It's a bad day when you think your Platy is going to give birth to what looks like lots and overnight she dies due to a block backside. Our day goes on with a heavy head🤢[emoji225]
