I got a 2 gallon bucket to help me do water changes on my 10 gallon. I had maybe .25ish, but did a 40 % just in case. We have over cast skies today and I like reading my API results in the sun. I plan on doing another filter squeeze this weekend, just to speed it up. The little platy I thought would make it with clean water and no over crowding in the tank, died. Thats most likely where the .25 came from.

Jess1ca 09-18-2012 08:03 PM

Watched my Nyererei's spawn :)

pcdebb 09-18-2012 11:47 PM

was doing my nightly observation on my tanks, and just "found" my peppermint shrimp in my 75 after two weeks lol

kjacks 09-18-2012 11:59 PM

Fed my betta n watched him show off for me..plannin on addin my gravel back since i have finally changed the bright neon mix my neices picked although i really like the tank without gravel i think the otos miss it.

George9 09-19-2012 12:01 AM

Cleaned my canister filter and did a pwc on the qt tank :-)

Aqualady40 09-19-2012 02:06 AM

Today I checked water parameters on my 55g and made a DIY filter...hope it works

Aqualady40 09-19-2012 02:23 AM

oops forgot to mention I made a water bottle filter to test....

Wednesday is water change day. Added root tabs to the 29. Found 2 baby java ferns tangled in my hornwort, wiped off some algae and discovered one of my corkscrew vals is about at the waterline.

54seaweed 09-19-2012 09:36 PM

show me some of your new goodies I know you just got a bunch not too long ago
you still got me beat with that new tank
I want to start a fiddler crab tank found a place online that has 25 of them for 14.95 for the lot
want 1/2 cause 25 in a 40g breeder will be way to many

eduguy 09-19-2012 09:40 PM

I vacuumed gravel on my 1 g bowl.

DoubleA 09-19-2012 09:43 PM

Water changes on all 3 tanks. Moved my new 55g to my bedroom and waiting for the rest of equipment to set it up as the replacement for my 20g community.
Went pokin' around Kenbob's 40g and noticed 2 baby cichlids under some driftwood and in an ornament. Born from the 2 holding cichlids I gave him a few weeks back. They are about 3/8 - 1/2" now :D

Ryleyman 09-19-2012 10:09 PM

Looked at my fish and wondering what my cichlid fry will look like!:-D

xwesx1978 09-19-2012 10:14 PM

installed a marine land heater on the 55 , had to send the old one back to because it broke , I have to say their customer service is pretty good I had a new heater within a week of calling them

Well I woke up this morning (after dreaming about this) and made up in my mind that I was going to attempt to make a solid wood tank stand for my 40B. I am really exhausted from looking for one made and reasonably priced. So here is a lovely picture of what I accomplished and I also painted the back blue, all I have left is to cut my reinforcing corner boards (which will make corners flushed) and attach them (this tank is my AFC tank...next I will be designing a funky tunnel with PVC piping :brows:(I think)...oh BTW the bottom is going to be for another tank...possibly a planted tank since I have never tried real plants :thumb:

Today I test my tap water parameters after the water had sat 24-48 hours...results are as follows: PH-7.4, Ammonia-.50, Nitrite-0, and Nitrate 0. I did my first sand bed sweep with a 75% water change. I did such a large water change when I test my 55g water parameters which were: Ph 7.4, Ammonia 2.0, Nitrite 0, and Nitrate 5.0......then i did retest the ammonia which was 1.0....I might as well mention that I also completed my stand (haven't found the perfect trim/border trim) for my new 40b today and stained a red mahogany:brows:....any advice on the sudden ammonia spike? Only thing I can think of is maybe some poop/uneaten food on sand bed but when I cleaned I didn't see any food and a little poop:confused:

pcdebb 09-22-2012 05:09 AM

I was putting all my babies to bed and noticed something odd in the guppy tank. one of my females was sort of "resting" in a plant. didnt seem right. i noticed two of her sisters dead. her other sister not looking good either. one of the oldest babies just floated by........

the heater is on the fritz and apparently cooking everyone, I can put my hand on the glass and it's quite warm to the touch. according to the thermometer the temp is over 90. I'm horrified.

Oceangirl 09-22-2012 09:44 AM

I'm so sorry! I hope no one is else going to the great lake in the sky!

pcdebb 09-22-2012 09:33 PM

I'm kinda bummed, but there's a whole lot of fry to keep the legacy going :D
got a new heater today so all should be well. I got this tank used like 2 years ago, which included the pump and the heater. the pump is still doing it's job pretty well tho

Terrance 09-22-2012 10:29 PM

Did my weekly 50-70% water change for my 120g and 20g puffer tank. I've been feeding them a lot of clams, which I caught last week.

My 46g soon-to-be-reef is still cycling.

54seaweed 09-23-2012 12:21 AM

Aqualady40 09-23-2012 02:01 AM

I did nothing for my 55g, I broke, smoothed edges, soaked, and cleaned slate tile for my 40g, and I placed my new 20g in my double tank stand I just built:brows:

Samzter 09-23-2012 03:45 AM

Did a 40% change on my 30g. Added 4 more cardinal tetras. That's about it!

Today's Tank Work

Hello AA...

Today, I'll add another plant to my tanks: Nephthytis. Normally, this isn't unusual, but as some know, in an effort to keep nearly self-sustaining tanks, I emerse the roots of some land plants in the tank water to keep the water free of nitrogen. Nitrogen is the waste the fish produce.

Anyway, the plants have worked extremely well. Ammonia and nitrite at "0" and nitrates at 10-20 ppm. Just a small, weekly water change of a couple of gallons per tank. An hour or two work for 5 larger tanks, to service the filtration that's still needed.

Have learned a good lesson: If I keep my hands out of the natural process of things in nature, they work much better.

Just sitting back and enjoying watching the plants and fish take care of each other.

pc deb... sorry about your losses. I am just glad your heater didn't burn your house down.

50% pwc on 29 Doing the 150 later.

Ferts for the plants More plants coming from hcourts this week :)

New baby clown pleco, panda cory, and two julii cories in 150, still shy and hiding in the rocks.

Jess1ca 09-23-2012 12:35 PM

Spending all morning working on the new tanks for the new builds. A 6ft 150g Mixed African and a 5ft 150g Saltwater :)

My hubby let me have my bday present early (2 weeks early) a brand new 29 gallon tank! I moved everyone over, and I sat down. So, I upgraded the 10 gallon Occupants to a 20 high, the 20 high occupants to the 29. I moved everything and didn't make alot of mess:whistle:. my hubby then tells me the sand of 20 looks better in the 29 and vice versa. Guess what I'll be doing next weekend. :ermm:

Spscoral313 09-23-2012 06:47 PM

Gonna do after change as soon as I get off the site and get motivated.

Aqualady40 09-23-2012 07:01 PM

Today I test my 55g water parameters and did a 25% water change. I am still trying to get a foundation for slate caves for my 40g soon to be African Cichlid tank...any suggestions please pm me

Alyxx 09-23-2012 10:49 PM

I did my weekly water change on my 56 gallon tank, and next up is my 5 gallon, then my 30 gallon saltwater puffer tank. Fed everyone some bloodworms and gave the plecos and snails in my 56 some cucumber. Snatched some ghost shrimp out of the 56 to give to my puffers, which they enjoyed. I need to make a trip to my LFS soon to get some more for them.

Edit: Everything is done. I'm so happy I got a water changer. I could take using buckets for a 20 and a 30, but for a tall 56, no way.

pcdebb 09-24-2012 03:05 AM

I had a bunch of decorations from my cichlid tank setup that needed to be cleaned, so i finally did that today. put one of those decorations in the angelfish tank today and a few more fake plants. I also added a 10,000k bulb in it since the tank is so tall to give it more light.

guppies are fine, but since the endler males survived I need to put some more females in there for them. they are some "hungry" guys

Jess1ca 09-24-2012 12:26 PM

Moving fry around to another tank and water changes.

Wroberson 09-24-2012 01:04 PM

Tested the water after 30% water change. Added 10ml trace, 5ml iron 10ml potassium. Going to scrape for algae. The right sight has a patch and there's a few streaks on the front glass. I believe there were leftovers from the last cleaning. At least that's what the 1/8th inch wide streaks are telling me. Will clean front glass with windex.

Tetra1990 09-24-2012 02:34 PM

50% water change on the 10 gallon. Topped off the 29. I have natural gravel in the 10 and its just dark and depressing. thinking of putting in sand.

eduguy 09-24-2012 02:44 PM

Tried feeding my new fish. The platy ate but the guppy didn't realy.

DragonFish71 09-24-2012 07:24 PM

Re-wired a hood from fluorescent tube to screw in cfl. Yay my 20L has light!

Ordered a ballast for one of my Coralife strips.

Got background material for the wall behind the new tanks. It's fake wood paneling, the tanks have been spray painted black on the back, so we wanted something to contrast other than ugly paneling.

54seaweed 09-25-2012 05:23 PM

fragged one of my corals and put the frags in empty spots to fill voids

Water changes and sand vacs all around, slight rearranging in the African tank since they think its cool to collapse my structures :P worked on the plumbing on my 150g saltwater I'm building. Scraped silicone off the 150g I got off Craigslist for my Africans... For some reason the previous owner had "painted" gobs of silicone all over an around the top trim piece (said it leaked?!) and then fed everyone and tucked them in for the night :D

Convict2161 09-25-2012 11:34 PM

Water change on my 75 gallon African tank. Cleaned, broke down, cleaned impeller and reassembled my fx5, found babies in my canister, found one of my CAE in my AC110 all are alive.

DoubleA 09-26-2012 02:40 AM

More work on the 55g I picked up for free off Craigslist. Got it up and running now (need to update my thread...). Water is now clear, it was mud from the flourite for a couple days :D. Found some fish on sale at LFS I liked, so I added 2 Black kuhli loach, 1 peppered cory catfish, 2 scissortail rasbora. Also picked up 4 new plants, a rose sword, 2x green ozelot, and a red flame sword. Gave one of them to my roomie, kenbob. And finally buckled down and got to planting everything. Looks smexy so far! :D

Working on it :) Currently have 2 of them, they are pretty much inseparable :D
Also the rasboras are in a school of 9 total so they are nice and comfy swimming around in their big group.

Thanks. I had 2. My tank is looking empty already. Should I think about getting another ram?

Well first off, I would try and figure out why the first one died? Did you test your water parameters?

I changed my 10 g tank water today. My platy was hit by the falling water from the bucket and got pushed to the bottom of my tank. :(

Im sure it was bullied by the other ram. The size between the 2 was the only way I could tell them apart. The one that died was pretty small. Today is water change day. So I did a 50% change when I got home( normally it's a 25-30%pwc) it's a 29 gallon with 7 black skirts, 4 black khuli loaches, clown pleco and some ghost shrimp along with the other ram

aaronjohn20 09-26-2012 10:04 PM

Not sure about adding another then since its a bully. Maybe rearrange your decor and try and find another one close to the size of yours. Id be concerned about adding another one but that's just me because the bolivian rams around me run for $12.99 at the lfs. Gbr's are only $8.99. I figured they would be more but I guess I am wrong lol

Yeah, if I'd add a new ram, I'd search for one around the same size. Thanks.

aaronjohn20 09-26-2012 11:57 PM

Picked a couple big snails out of my fry tank from the plants brought home from the lfs awhile back. There are eggs EVERYWHERE lol! Gave them toi my oscar; who loved them! Fed everyone else

kjacks 09-27-2012 02:41 PM

Fixed my aquarium lights this morning n fed my Neo his morning snack (a bloodworm)..im gonna do a water change once i get off work then head to town to purchase all my new aquarium equipment for my 55g tank n rearrange the house to set it up for cycling.

Hello Ocean...

Good for you. Larger tanks are much easier to maintain. The more water you have, the more "wiggle" room for accidents in tank management, which happen to even the best water keeper.

I went to 55 G tanks and they're so easy to keep. I just change half the water in them weekly. Now, I don't have to test the water or have a larger than normal filter or filters. By flushing a lot of pure, treated tap water through the tank, you guarantee stable water conditions for the fish and plants.

Using Land and Aquatic Plants in my Tank

AA...

Emersed several "Nephthytis" plants into my 55 G tanks, along with the Aglaonema, Pothos and "Queen Marble" Philodendron. With the roots under the tank water and the leaves above to pick up the "ambient" light and CO2, the tank is balanced between fish and plants. The "Ag" plants have multiple white blossoms, many more than I've seen on potted plants. The nitrogens produced by the fish are the best natural ferts I've ever used. The Flora Pride liquid from Tetra is very good too as a supplement.

The plants continue to purify the water and take in the wastes faster than the bacteria in the back up filtration. So, the nitrates are low. I guess it's not surprising the plants do a more thorough job of cleaning the water than I did when I was doing the large, weekly water changes. They've been on the job much longer.

Versa tops has a nice all glass lid for them if I am not miistaken. That's what's on mine. Did you get the oak trim or black trim?

Aqualady40 09-27-2012 07:20 PM

I painted my 55g background blue, finished making last 2 caves for my 40b, did a complete water change on 40b, 60% partial water change on 55g due to high nitrites (still cycling), and stirred up 40b and 55g sand subtrate so it appears hilly instead of smooth and flat......

In the mail to me? lol

Hub has already "named" my collection of tanks "The Northfork Aquatic Center" ... I tell him it's nothing compared to you guys' collections

Got plants yesterday from hcourts, and are now planted in 150 FW. Moved around some rocks.

Did routine PWC Sunday.

Fed the fish their various foods.

eduguy 09-27-2012 08:00 PM

Today I changed the water in my fish tank again.

aaronjohn20 09-28-2012 01:42 AM

Not my tank but......... my mom called me today sounding upset. She lost a silver dollar and a clown loach today due to a heater malfunction. Water got too hot, heater never kicked off. Its a tetra heater that they sell at walmart that are preset at 78. Man, I thought them things were cheap till I started looking around online for heaters. Well I guess they are cheap, cheap made. Makes me feel bad because its the heater that I had bought for my tank 1 yr ago and give it to her cause I was no longer using it. DON'T SKIMP ON PRODUCTS YOUR FISH DEPEND ON! DON'T DO IT, ITS NOT WORTH IT. Sorry lol, I guess after learning your lesson, you can't stress this enough!

Convict2161 09-29-2012 12:56 AM

Just did a 50% on my 75g African Cichlid tank. I'm shot so the BC29 will have to wait until tomorrow. Water is here and the heater and power head are working as we speak so it will be ready to go tomorrow when I'm ready lol

aaronjohn20 09-29-2012 01:58 AM

Went to my parents again today to check their aquarium out since they lost 2 fish yesterday due to a malfuctioning heater. 2 more fish had died today also. I think they were hatchetfish but not real sure.

Malfunctioning heaters suck. Today I tested my water.
0.25 ammonia
Almost no Nitrite.

Thanks for the reply back BBradbury! I had thought no body noticed and it made my day that you did!! I actually convinced my hubby that the sand stays where its currently because I just had an outbreak of something I think wasting disease (in my 20 high) and did not want to boil/sanitize sand and make a large mess.

Sand Substrates

Hello again Ocean...

You're welcome. I check in on this thread occasionally, to see what others are doing. Good luck with the sand. Gravel is most commonly used, I prefer pea-sized. It allows for good water circulation for the nutrients to get to the plant roots and is easily cleaned of wastes.

Sand can sometimes get compacted and the plants can't breathe or get food and voids can develop and form little pockets of toxins. Do you clean the sand regularly and how is it done? Just interested.

Oceangirl 09-30-2012 06:22 PM

I actually under stock sand so to speak, I have a min. amount of sand and stir it every couple weeks. I have a 30 gallon tank and I think 15 pounds of sand. I can't remember LOL. My cories, turn the sand as well, my sand ranges from 1 inch to less than one inch. I have the sand built around my amazon sword (Which is dug up Every week by my cories) I also have been rearranging decor because I just moved everybody over from a 20 high. I use my gravel vac and all the yuck (poo, plant, etc) I was considering Malaysian Trumpet snails, but I hear they are very hard to get rid of. I do 50% water changes, yesterday today I did another 5 or so trying out my new gravel vac, top fin from Petsmart.

I also have a little less than a cm of root at the base of the amazon sword sticking above the sand. I use liquid ferts and I noticed they like it better that way.

Tank Info.

Hello Ocean...

Agree with the large weekly water changes. Never had much luck with smaller tanks. Never got the water chemistry quite right. I started having more success when I went to larger tanks. I have 5, the smallest is 38 gallons. Seems like for me, the water chemistry is more consistent when there's more of it in a tank.

Anyway, thanks for insight into the smaller "water cubes".

Today was supposed to be water change day but just did not happen.

Cleaned out the 29 filter.

Planning to do the wc tomorrow. Overdue for testing on all.

Is there a trick to getting the flow started on a huge python? Because I am at my wit's end with this one I have.

Coel 10-01-2012 02:51 AM

I fed my fish...of course and also finally put timers on my lights. It was about time to give them regularity.

pcdebb 10-01-2012 06:10 AM

Did a water change on mom 55 gallon. For some reason it gets a cloudy haze after a few days. Possible algae bloom of some sort, but don't know the source of this....

Hello aaron..

Algae growth is nothing more than too much dissolved fish or plant food in the water and a reason for cloudy tank water. If you over feed, then primitive plants, like algae, will thrive. In nature plants and fish are fortunate to eat once a week. That's different than the daily buffet we provide at home.

I feed my fish and plants twice a week and just a little. My plants are healthy and my fish are always swimming around the the plants and at the bottom looking for a piece of food that's been overlooked. Good exercise.

Feed less and you'll have healthy fish, plants and a tank with stable water proprerties and no visible algae in the tank.

Added a Couple of Land Plants

Hello...

Added a couple of land plants to my 45 G. The tank is full and I have four different species of land plants that I can grow in nothing but water. The roots get very thick and almost white.

The roots take in the nitrogen the fish produce. The waste dissolves in the water and water movement provided by the HOBs move the water through the plant roots. The water stays pure with no more than a small water change of a couple of gallons per week to service the filtration equipment.

Haven't tested the tank water in weeks, but it's perfectly clear and my "Livebearers" are breeding constantly. An added benefit, is the land plants take in all the dissolved nutrients, so there's no visible algae in the tank.

What land plants do you hane in there? Also how do u put them in your tank? Do you just float them, put them in the substrate or ????????????

BBradbury 10-01-2012 12:06 PM

Using Land Plants in Freshwater Tanks

Hello aaron...

I have Aglaonema, Pothos, Philodendron and Nephthytis. I make a large, retangular pocket of plastic netting attached to long bamboo sticks. The netting is secured by plastic twist ties. Simple to lay the frame across the top of the tank and emerse the plant root ball into the tank water. The leaves are held above the water by the netting. There's no substrate needed.

All the potting mixture must be rinsed off the roots before putting the roots into the tank water or the plant will die. The roots take in the nutrients from the fish waste and balance the water chemistry.

I keep the standard HOB filters to filter the tank water at night when the plants slow their filtration work. The filters keep the water moving through the plant roots, so there's a constant source of nourishment for the plants. The leaves grow with the long hours of low light and CO2 from the air circulating in the room.

The great thing about the plants, they require only ambient "room light". I have some pole lamps I leave on 12 hours a day and the plants are thriving. I may have some pics I can post if you're interested.

I fed the fish and turned on the lights.

Andrew McFadden 10-01-2012 01:44 PM

I did 3 30-40% water changes on my 180 :)

clearancepuppy 10-01-2012 04:08 PM

I spent two hours this am water changing the 29 & 150, testing, documenting, fertilizing, cleaning glass, cleaning small filter, and large canister-wrangling.
