did water changes on all the tanks tonite and i'm exhausted!! decided to try and get some more pics of my fishies, and some of them came out pretty good, even the guppies! some of my fry are getting good colors in them and some are turning into very pretty male endlers :)

Botanica 10-28-2012 04:01 AM

Did water change in 135 and 20 gallon tanks and finally got to set up my new 55 gallon planted! Yay! And I only had to wash one bag of pfs! I can't wait to plant it.

Oh...and we also did water tests in the three tanks, trimmed and replanted the wisteria in the 135 and fed the fish of corse. ;-)

kjacks 10-28-2012 11:40 AM

Did 50% water change on my 10g removed n cleaned all decor ..cleaned gravel ..cleaned all equipment n well feed the fish before i cleaned ...

callisto9 10-28-2012 11:56 AM

Did a body check to make sure all fish are alive. I lost a handful of guppies when I first got into this hobby, so every day, I check for deaths. So far, so good!

Tetra1990 10-28-2012 01:14 PM

Normally on Sunday I don't do anything. But I was watching my 29 gallon and seen a ton of baby mts on the water surface. War has been declared!!! I think I made a small dent in the population. As this was going on, I found a blackskirt tetra that had passed away:( so, ended up doing a 10% pwc on the 29 and topped off the 10.

Slade 10-28-2012 03:18 PM

70% PWC on all my tanks. Skipped feeding until storm has passed, hoping power holds here in NJ.

Did water test on the new 55 and added ammonia to start my fishless cycle. :-D.

Added excel to the 135 and fed the fish...easy day!

Water changes is my best time of the week for me. Barney only gets excited when he see his cup of food. He gets scared when the siphon enters the water though.

New Aglaonema Plants in Tanks

Hello again AA...

Added two Aglaonema "Cutlass" plants to my terraphyte/biotope tanks. Using a little liquid fert in addition to the nitrogens the fish produce. Plant experts say to "mist" the leaves with a spray bottle containing treated tap water and a source of micro nutrients.

Appartently, since the plants come from a humid environment, misting the leaves mimics humid conditions. The plant roots take in the water nutrients and the leaves remove excess water from droplets that form on the leaves. Supposedly similar to "pearling" in aquatic plants. Room temp is at 72 degrees. Aglaonema is supposed to be slow growing, but the growth is considerable from what I've noticed over the past couple of months. The land plant grows better emersed than potted.

Water properties in the tanks remain stable with water changes at a gallon or two a week. Pretty amazing since the tanks are 38 to 55 gallons. Fish continue to breed normally.

Just an update.

Put on the heat and added salt. Turns out my 10 gallon has ick. :(

pcdebb 11-04-2012 02:46 AM

filled up the 46 bow. decided to go with flora max as the substrate. got the filter running so things can settle and clear overnight. will search for plants tomorrow.

setup the 10 gallon and moved over my angel pair and remaining eggs. this is the first batch for all of us so it's an experience. i used alot of the water from the existing tank to seed the 10 and 46 so the 44 corner got a good water change. and as a reward for everyone behaving, they got a nice dinner of frozen brine shrimp :)

i'm exhausted and havent even looked at the salt tanks!

Botanica 11-04-2012 11:16 AM

Did the full service on the 135... Pruned plants, washed walls, cleaned out hob...surprised how dirty it got in just a few weeks! We also changed the water of corse...lol. I also did water tests on all three tanks and added ammonia to the 55 on fishless cycle. ( moving along at light speed!). Tomorrow I will get the new 20 gallon going so I can switch the fish from the 20 in the kitchen. The one in the kitchen is overrun with pond snails from the family trying to help feed the fish...lol. I'm going to move the filter etc from the kitchen tank to the one in the fish room and tear down and clean the one in the kitchen. I will also switch out its gravel for pfs...but prob after the holiday season. I need the kitchen counter space for holiday baking! ;-).

callisto9 11-04-2012 11:33 AM

Today, I will sit and watch. :) Yesterday I did a WC and cleaned up the 20G. Added four little japan blue guppies to the QT tank.

kjacks 11-04-2012 01:19 PM

Going to look around at petsmart for some new territories for my african cichlids that dont take up to much space .. got my water setup lettin it get room temp n what not before i do a pwc on the 10g .. i always fix up the water before church then come home after church n do my maintence ... considerin buyin sand for the 10g n changin the 5.5gal to the 10gs gravel ..

Apologized to my fish and plants this afternoon. I got to work in the morning and forgot to turn on the lights. yes, it did bother me for 8 hours.

aaronjohn20 11-05-2012 06:37 PM

Did a 50% pwc on the 46g bf last night and done another 70% this morning. It had been a 2 weeks since the last one and it needed it. As I was refilling the tank 2 of my angel fish were picking at the powerhead and sure enough by afternoon time they had spawned. Same male with a different female this time. This will be my second first time mother so I'm not expecting things to go good once again lol

Hello Tetra...

How about putting the tank lights on a timer? The LFS has some that cost next to nothing and they'll last quite a while. Marineland has an "Aqua Timer" for about $8.00. Set the lights for 12 hours on and 12 off. Most aquarium plants are tropical and used to long hours of daylight. The fish are indifferent to light, but do need periods of light and darkness or dusk so their reproduction processes remain normal.

Just a thought.

Biotope Tanks

Well...

This morning I misted the emersed land plants in my tanks. I use a combo of treated tap water and a liquid plant food in the mist. The plant leaves absorb the nutrients in the spray and the emersed roots use the nitrogens produced by the fish.

My basement tank room is relatively humid this time of year. Can't leave the windows open to dry out the room. Temp in the tanks is 76 and the basement stays close to this temp year round. Pretty toasty for a northern Colorado basement.

The land plants continue to purify the tank water and show better growth than the same plant potted in standard organic potting mixture.

Did my weekly water changes for my puffer tanks. Then searched craigslist for large 100+ gallon tanks.

Autumnsky 11-05-2012 11:46 PM

Busy fish day

Did a moderate rescape of the 6.6G Edge dwarf shrimp tank adding Dwarf Hair Grass right in the middle to get the most light. I have the halogen bulbs not LED, since I found some on clearance it may be awhile until I upgrade to the LED ones. Also added two small Widelov "Fern".

Added an Africa Anubias, to my 38G along with a pwc, leaf trim and slight rearrange of a few plants. Added a Fern on a coco fiber log don't know name of it yet. Cleaned out the filter and prefilter ....YIKES. Pretty mucky!!!

Filled the pond and took out small pebbles from a potted lily after one of my Koi got a pebble stuck in his mouth. Never even thought about the pebbles in there as the leaves covered it when I bought it. Cleaned out the leaves and cleaned the prefilter.

Filled up the other three tanks. All is great in fishland except 1 male Betta has a tummy ache, he pooped big and he's looking better now.

Bought Flourish this time and dosed all the tanks after all the pwc were finished.

Gave everyone a treat of freeze dried brine shrimp. Tomorrow maybe able to pick up fresh, mmmmmm!

kjacks 11-07-2012 11:35 PM

Did a small pwc n cleaned all my equipment off bc i realized i forgot to sunday. Rearranged n added a few things. Sat back n watched my fish i think my betta thinks she is an oto..lol she is right n the middle of them going up n down the side of the tank .. lol :)

pcdebb 11-08-2012 05:58 AM

Finally added some color to the 75. Added a yellow wrasse. They had some mono sebaes that I want too....

Added a pair of seargent majors to the 44 corner

Finishing up the 46 bow with more plants

San Raphael Catfish 11-08-2012 04:18 PM

It was tank cleaning day! Everyone but the new snail tank got a nice cleaning. The snails get to wait til tomorrow. Everyone got fed frozen food today. Bloodworms for the tropicals and the crays, shrimp for the puffers. The puffers got some snails, too. And fresh zucchini is about to go in the tropical tank and the snail tank.

pcdebb 11-11-2012 02:37 AM

cranked up the ro/di system today and made plenty of water for water change day tomorrow. aging some fresh water, mixing the salt.

clark4feathers 11-11-2012 07:26 PM

Today, I did a RTWC on my seahorse tank, argued with my refugium pum. That is always a challenge. Up and running.

Tetra1990 11-13-2012 07:37 PM

Pwc on both tanks, added root tabs to the 29. I will add liquid ferts to the 10 when I feed later. Last night before I fed my fish they went crazy!!! In my 29: I didn't even have the lid open and my fish were popping at the surface like crazy!! In my 10: all of my neons were playing in the filter current and diving and darting for the food. Usually they are timid and don't do this. Oh well, they must have been happy.

Aqualady40 11-16-2012 11:47 PM

On my 5g qt, I did a 75% water change, leaned all poop from oto and scubbed algae. On my planted 20H, I did a 50% pwc, scraped my blue background paint off and re-painted background black. On my 40B, I did nothing. On my 55g, I did a 90% water change as directed per med that I am dosing for filter parasites treatment (yeah really works to).

Nope it's salt. I know about their brackish/freshwater/saltwater thing. The store had some in both of their systems, and from what i read they prefer more salt as they get older. They are loving their home.

foster53 11-18-2012 09:25 AM

They are very cool fish. Thats one fish I have never kept in all my years at this hobby. Are they better kept in a full marine environment? I have kept Scats before, but they were in a brackish tank, along with Orange Chromides.

Tetra1990 11-18-2012 12:38 PM

Deep cleaned both filters, the one on my 29 runs like new now. Before it had so much gunk built up it was,I'm guessing, only running at 75%. Gravel vaced the 10 gallon in the process. Crossing my fingers that I don't have a Mimi-cycle.

callisto9 11-18-2012 01:16 PM

Tank looks good Rlavassor86!

I did a 6 gallon wc on my 20G. Trimmed, snipped, moved a few things, replanted a few things. Now I'm watching my albino cories zip all over the tank. Do they ever tire?

Getting all the tanks back up and back to normal after the storm and being deployed all over the place. Got home last night and the mutual aid plan for the county has been suspended for now at least... Now it's time to work on my own stuff and be with the family.

From what I gather its better in the long run to be in a marine environment. As they get older and for breeding. I'm not finding a whole lot of info on them, but I'm observing them closely. They pretty much stick together and are very active

Crawdaddy 11-18-2012 10:57 PM

Had to replace my Fluval 306 today. The intake tube came off last week while I was out of town. That, evaporation, and he wife not knowing better, burned the pump out. On he good side, I believe I can order a rebuild kit for it, so when I get my 125, I have the extra filter I will need.

Terrance 11-18-2012 11:28 PM

Terraphyte Tanks

Hello...

Topped off the tanks and trimmed the land plants I have emersed in my five terraphyte tanks. The land plants are doing well. Livebearers are breeding regularly and the Corydoras are really growing nicely. Some of the Emeralds are approaching 3 inches. The smaller Panda and Orange Saddle Corys are active as ever. Lots of eggs, but no little ones I can see. pH is at 7.4 as of the last test, so not optimum for them.

Plants continue to take up the ammonia and nitrites in the water. Last test, nitrates were at 10 ppm.

Water changes down from 125 gallons per week to less than 15. What a relief!

Today is operation fishtank: 25% water changing the 36gal, taking some water change water, dumping that into the 20gal to speed up the cycling process. Going to the LFS- looking at a new heater for the 36gal, getting some plants for the 20gal, and researching fish, to see if they'd be compatible with dwarf puffers- busy day planned!

Hello in...

Possibly someone else has let you know, tranferring water from a cycled tank to a new tank won't speed cycling. Most of the good bacteria lives on surfaces inside the established tank, not much in the water.

If you really want to speed the cycling process transfer anything with a surface, like gravel, decorations, media, plants, etc.

Just a thought.

I would also suggest borrowing some filter media. That's where most of your bb is at. Out some into the filter on the new tank. Will speed cycling more that using your water from the other tank.

Yeah I know- ideally, I'd do something with the filters, but the 36gal has an HOB, and the 20gal has a internal...

Just got back from the LFS- planted some Red Ludwiga in the 20gal, and I had to replace the air stone. Thinking of fabricating myself a quick water changer that attaches to my tap, since my LFS has the valves I need for for for $14.

Wroberson 11-19-2012 02:58 PM

Today I added

1 Bosemani Rainbow Male. (sale $5.50)
2 Turquoise Rainbows (sale $3.50)
3 Lily Bulbs (for the price of 2)

So far I have freaked out the fish, fed the fish and currently planning a 40% water change. The Turquoise Rainbows seemed to just fit in while the Bosemani Rainbow is hanging out in the plants. I just saw the orange New Guinea Rainbow bring the Bosemani male a piece of food and spit it out right by him. It turned out to be a piece of plant root. I've seen this activity before.

I still have the following on my to buy list

2 Bosemani Rainbow (1 male, 1 female)
3 Australian Rainbow (1 Ornate female, 2 Splendid (1 male, 1 female))
1 Dennisoni Barb ($9.09 now, waiting for sale)

Saw some Neon Rainbows, Threadfin Rainbows and Celebres Rainbows at the store. The neons were in a bag and didn't look to good and the other two were too expensive and I hope they go on sale soon.

Did an 80% pwc and dosed api aquarium salt in the oscar and acf tank, did almost 100% water change and dosed salt in the 10g fry tank. Trying to combat the cloudy water issue I am having. I think its because of all the snails, atleast that's what I've read. I'm not sure though. Everything else seems to be in check and no I don't have a mini cycle going on

Terraphyte Tanks

Hello...

Topped off the tanks this afternoon. Replace 4 to 5 gallons a week, but I suppose that's typical of tanks with no covers. The emersed land plants act as the tank covers.

Also, added a little extra aeration to the plant roots. By using plastic tubing and large air pumps, the water around the roots is constantly moving and supplies nitrogens. There is a constant supply of CO2 from the air in the room.

The Chinese Evergreen and Pothos actually grow faster and appear healthier than the same plants planted in organic potting soil.

I got a Half-moon BEAUTIFUL! Elephant ear betta. And some glo-lights and some neon tetras(which My hubby wants to steal for his tank). He was on sale for a half moon and CLEARLY an elephant ear. I will try to take an actual picture later, because now he is hiding. here is what he looks like. But with more purple accents. He will be very well loved

Pwc on both tanks. A few hours later I walked in on the tanks and this is what was going on between my male Bolivian ram and my smallest Cory cat. The ram was in 'his' spot and the Cory cat was pestering the heck outta him. Darting around/under the big ram and creating quite the sandstorm. The Cory isn't even 1inch long!

After struggling through a fish in cycle on my grandfathers 55g I got so mad today.

I sent him to the store to get a new 306 so that I could have my 305. He bought it.... and then listened to the employee at the store who told him to TOSS OUT THE CYCLED MEDIA!

I told him that's wrong. His response: well you don't get paid to sell fish. I'll listen to the employee.

So, did he toss the media out? And if he do, did you dig it outta the trash?

Of course he tossed it... every bit of the media. I don't live with my grandparents so this conversation was held over the phone. They live across town. He is convinced the employee knows it all. Ha.

Anywho ...... when I swing by tomorrow I'm good to seed it and give him my bottle of prime. I was livid!

I pulled my (now deceased) clownfish out of the clam he was recently hosting. No fun...

Just tested the 20 and fry tanks. Noticed we have more fry in the 20 and thought "I need to start a predator tank". Told my wife about
It and why. Then decided I enjoy sleep in my bed enough that taking the fry to the LFS was a much better idea. Lol!!! Stared at the 40b that I started cycle on yesterday!! Woot!! Have to decide on the aqua scape and get to planting. 2mrw is water change Sunday.
