Yeah, I'm fairly comfortable in my means. But I can't just give away a tank. =\

bigbanker 12-12-2012 07:49 PM

I was worried about my otos starving in my 110 so I put them in my 29 for the day..... the 29 had plenty of diatoms as I frequently leave the light on and the tank is near a window. The 29 is almost completely diatom free after four hours.

EShark83 12-12-2012 09:13 PM

Did my 50% pwc yesterday and checked my params today. Have had my ammonia reading at 0 the past two days after dosing it up to 4ppm both times, just waiting on my Nitrites to drop! The Nitrites and NitrAtes are still very high so hopefully soon I'll get my 0 Nitrites and add my first fish.

He is living like a king as the only male in the tank with all those lovely ladies :D

Fish In Cycling

Hello baron...

Have to make a pitch for "Fish In" cycling of an aquarium. I had to have some activity in my new tank. Couldn't wait the two months for the cycling process without the benefit of fish. I got a good sized tank in the beginning, 30 gallons. Was told the more water, the better in case I messed up on something.

Started with 8 feeder Guppies and tested the water every day for toxins and changed out at least a quarter of the tank when a test showed traces of ammonia or nitrite.

The experts were right. By carefully checking the water daily and adding fish when several tests showed "0" for any toxins, my fish made it through my "learning curve".

I added some plants and some more fish. I have five large tanks now and the 8 feeders have reproduced about 1,500 Fancy Guppies.

The "Fish-In" cycling works. But only if you do your job.

Just a couple of thoughts.

A power head helps with this. It's current helps lift it for the filters to pick up. Also, I use an Eheim battery powered vacuum to spot clean.

I grabbed the 4 corydoras out of my 10 gallon and put them into my 46 gallon. Now they school, and my firemouth has come out of hiding. Interesting. I also learned that this is one of the fish I didn't do the right research on. I'm only recently learning they grow to 3 inches, so they're a perfect add on fish to my breeding pair of firemouths... whenever I get the pair... and they start breeding... some day.

A few people told me no, but to be honest the change in that tank is huge. All the fish involved are 10x happier.

Terrance 12-16-2012 03:54 AM

Changed 75% of the water today for the crayfish and puffer tank.

Planning to buy more equipment for my reef tank. The more I think about my reef tank, the less interest I have in my freshwater tanks. There is a temptation to ditch all my freshwater tanks.

Today...

Replaced a couple of older Chinese Evergreens, see attached pics. The tank has minimal mechanical filtration, just one Hagen AC 50. The emersed land plants keep the water pure. No traces of nitrogens in the tank water. Tank is heavily stocked with roughly 75 Fancy Guppies and two larger than normal Bronze Corys, 3 plus inches long that have been in tank four years or so.

Land plants do a much better job of purifying the tank water than mechanical filtration.

Wish I had more took what I had out of my 37 for my 55 which were only about 10, have you checked on the amount and how often you feed? Usually that will stop them from reproduction.

Totally cleaned my 55 African tank all the way down to removing my sand bed. I was a little worried that it was going to cycle again . But so far it is perfectly clear and all my levels were great. My fish are super happy ...not even a little stressed. It was the first time they have been moved out of the tank since I started it.... Now I just got to keep my eyes on my nitrates and ammonia...so far..perfect

Removed my egg crate that I was growing corals on. I just got tired of have to clean around it and hair algae was a pain to get off of it. Topped off the tank and that's about it for today. Time to glue some frags to rock work or find a home for them on the sand bed!

Ignore how cloudy my tank is. I was blowing off rocks.

This might sound stupid but my first go with actual sand, does it ever completely settle, my tank still seems a tad bit cloudy after 3 weeks.

Jeremy S. 12-16-2012 10:50 PM

It can be a pain in the butt sometimes. Just cut down on as much flow as possible and then be patient. I've had this tank setup for over a year and a half now so I don't remember how long mine took to settle.

TidBitz 12-16-2012 10:51 PM

Ok thank you

Night before last I went to pick up a 110G tank full of plants and was asked to take the fish too! Wow, some of the biggest fish I have seen. I still need to set my 72G tank.

Tons of plants... 2 - 6" & 7" Siamese Algae Eaters, a big Clown Loach, going to a new home in a huge tank and lots more Clowns. The biggest Red Tail Shark I have seen, really pretty of course 6". Several Otos, the biggest blue Gourami I have seen 6", looks kinda like a dinosaur fish! Set up a temporary tank to hold the Shark, Clown and Gourami, ended up with a Sword and an Oto in there too.

Going to get the 72G up tomorrow or the next day!

Being impatient waiting for the tank to cycle!

Ammonia-consuming bacteria is established. I can dose ammonia and it is gone in 24 hours. NItrites have spiked and seem to be coming down but very slowly. Nitrates are off the chart. Waiting for nitrites to read 0 ppm then ready for big water change to get rid of nitrates. Then the stocking begins!

Filtration for Terraphyte Tanks

Hello all...

Have found a little mechanical filtration is needed for tanks that mainly use emersed land plants to maintain pure water conditions for fish. An HOB will help keep the tank water clear. I noticed a little cloudiness in my 38 G and added a Hagen AC 50 to the tank and within 24 hours, the water was nice and clear.

The land plants continue to remove all forms of nitrogen from the the water. No large, weekly water changes. With the addition of the HOBs, total maintenance time for five large tank is roughly an hour, possibly two per week.

Another Low Maintenance Tank

3 Attachment(s)
Hello again Aa...

Had this old 20 G tank sitting around collecting dust and a rather large Aglaonema "Gemini" land plant sitting in a pot (see attached pics). Thought I'd combine the two into a no water change "Terraphyte" tank. All forms of nitrogen are taken by the plant roots, so it maintains stable water properties.

Added a small HOB to filter the water at night, when the plants slow their filtering work. Need to top off the water that's lost to evaporation a couple of times a week and trim the plants to generate new growth. Pretty much self-sustaining.

Total time needed to set up and run the tank was about 90 minutes.

And changed 5g of water out every hour or 2 until my 10g planted until it stabilized after a complete crash that wiped out most of my lily leaves- managed to save the plant though, but did lose a crypt- and by the skin of my teeth saved my peace lily- thought it was dead soaked root bulb in cycled water with a drop of ferts after stripping dead leaves and roots and got a small root to thicken and a green starter leaf pop out, then replanted.

 and then I rearranged my rocks in my nano reef start up, again.... Oh, like none of you spent the day playing with rocks, water and plants

Pics of "Aglaonema" Emersed Land Plants

4 Attachment(s)
Hello again Aa...

Have become somewhat obsessed with growing Chinese Evergreens by emersing them in my planted tanks, see attached pics. Growth is extremely fast, with multiple blossoms. Plants are cheap and easy to maintain. Lighting is just room light from several 60 watt eco lamps.

The land plant grows much faster with the roots in the tank water, than in potting soil. It gets a constant supply of nutrients from the water and returns pure water to the tank.

smithpants94 12-29-2012 04:00 PM

Went to the nearest PetSmart to browse as usual. All the tanks looked especially nice and cared for, which made me want to give them my business... bought 3 acei and 3 Demasoni ! They all look really good. Acclimating them as I type!

Autumnsky 12-29-2012 05:50 PM

Getting ready to sell and trade some shrimp and guppies.

Moved blue Cherry shrimp from the big tank to the blue Cherry Shrimp tank.

Moved a couple keeper male guppies to the main tank and two females to the Snail tank to keep them apart! lol Don't want 100 guppies....AGAIN

Cleaned the filters in three tanks, yuk!!!

Found when I got up this morning that ice had formed around my overflow on my above ground little pond's filter and caused 2/3 of the water volume in the pond to dump out, its only 125 gal and the filter is about 50 gal, filter was full, I have a minimum level on the pump to make sure it doesn't go dry. So filling that was fun!

Moved my CPO who must have eaten her babies... out of the shrimp tank and into the main tank. Boy that was dumb leaving her in there. She was so fun to watch when the light was on, I never saw her eat anybody, duh! Well I won't do that again.

Ended up working through the night to rescape everything and switch substrate to sand which was a longer job than i expected (had to leave fish in tank during switch), added new cannister filter and peat balls to keep ph around 6.5, trimmed back plants, dosed with ferts and then cleaned up all the mess I'd made in the process!!!!!! wasn't fun at 5am!!!!!!!!!!
Should look nice once the water clears though. :fish2:

Pearl Gourami mine is one of my favorite fish. This one has such a sweet demeanor though I did have a Hellion Killer Pearl Gourami, which I pretty much sorry to use the word, hated...he had to go.

I bought a piece of slate for my bolivians to spawn on. Hopefully that will help them be more successful. With my luck they won't even spawn on it though... I also got six otos. What fun little guys! I'm really liking them. I'm hoping they will all make it since I hear they often die in the first month or so. They seem to have acclimated well though and are busy eating algae.

Curious to know what plants and fish you have

Autumnsky 01-01-2013 01:06 AM

Made a Java Moss screen/background

I finally made one, been meaning to do this for soooo many months!!!

Then I found i didn't have the right spot for it, a little large, the plant leaves are in the way now, its been so long, lol, but shoved it in a different tank anyway!

Sewed the moss onto a plastic craft needlepoint panel with fishing line. Rinsed it and then stuffed it in the back of the tank. Used the black plastic mesh. I have 6" circles which I need to make, originally got the circles to put in the back of my 6.6 Edge for my shrimp.

Check that one off the list with only minutes to spare
