water change on my 29 reef and rubbing off some diatoms. anyone have advice on fragging a GSP?

kjacks 11-05-2013 01:35 AM

Did a water change last night bc i know i have been slacking and it was a hassel since all my primer is at moms except one of those 7 drop per gallon ones i keep for 1-3g changes or top offs and i changed 25g exactly... well i did it anyway and my cichlids seem happier.. ;) i also change polyfil on one filter .. then today i did a small change on the 20g and removed some dying plant parts my snails were not really happy but i feed them and the shrimp to distract them from me removing there goodies...lol one leaf was covered in snails so bad it was weighed down to the sand :/ my cray needs to start munching or moms puffer will be a fat happy boy soon

You can either lay small pieces of rock next to it and let it grow into it and then just cut it off, or just cut off a small piece and use mesh to hold it onto rock/plug until it adheres. Both work fine

Daniel Fishy 11-05-2013 09:11 AM

Cut it with a razor peel it off and glue it to a rock. Then sit back and enjoy.

All I do is tear the purple encrusting part and glue it on a rock.

aquandrew 11-05-2013 11:08 AM

awesome, i read it was that easy, but haven't tried it yet. I'm going to be building a structure, out of crushed coral and cement, to put the GSP on to keep it from spreading so bad.

i read that if you do this, you can just slice off whatever starts growing on the sand bed and keep it from spreading. the gsp i got was on a "broken rock frag" so it isn't glued to anything and i can just peel it off

Stlrockguy 11-05-2013 11:55 AM

It attaches itself. At least mine did.

Great idea. That's what mine is kind of like. IMO GSP is a pretty coral if you keep it on it's own island. One of my favorite softies actually!

Fishman007 11-05-2013 12:04 PM

20g crashed... 3 neons dead. 2 still with pop eye and fin rot. GBRs are laying on the sand with pop eye, fungal infections, and fin rot... Kuhli loaches still alive :( not sure what happend over night, expecting to loose the GBRs later today, did a 25% wc.

Stlrockguy 11-05-2013 12:15 PM

I have mine on a decent chunk of live rock front corner of my tank. I have pulsing xenias in the opposite corner

Rodeo one 11-05-2013 12:21 PM

Ugh...that s horrible! Hope it gets better for you.

Fishman007 11-05-2013 12:27 PM

Just lost my smallest kuhli loache :(

Fishman007 11-05-2013 12:31 PM

Does anyone know what a red half circle around the eye means?

cmwalters 11-05-2013 12:41 PM

My kribs' eggs were due to hatch some time yesterday or overnight. And I woke this morning and couldn't see any eggs but they were still guarding their cave. Maybe I have babies! I didn't get to look real hard for them because I had to go to class. But here's to hopeful thinking!

Fishman007 11-05-2013 12:51 PM

Well the male ram just swam around a little and it looks like he about to die

Aw. Any ideas at all what might've caused the crash?

Not yet... All perameters are good... I got a new filter and heater but dont think that did it.

Fishman007 11-05-2013 01:42 PM

Well female GBR just got sucked into the filter intake, constantly turning it off so that they dont get trapped. She is still alive but just barley... She is sitting on the bottom on her side, stareing up at the surface... Probably gonna shut down the tank if the GBRs die... They are my favorite fish. :(

Fishman007 11-05-2013 02:08 PM

Female is no longer with us... :(

Fishman007 11-05-2013 02:42 PM

And another dead kuhli loache

You should probably do large water changes for the next few days.

Fishman007 11-05-2013 04:09 PM

I did a 25% earlier. Should i do another? I dont think they are gonna last much longer from the looks of it :(

I'd say yes. Just make sure temperatures and ph are matched very well so there's no extra stress.

Fishman007 11-05-2013 06:23 PM

Gonna let everyone die peacfully... I think they are sick beyond return :( the remaining kuhli loaches are hundleing together breathing rapidly and the male ram is still laying still breathing fast. The two neons are slowly but surely dieing. I did another WC but it didnt seem to help :(

Do one every few hours if possible until they seem to get better. It's at least worth a try.

Fishman007 11-05-2013 06:51 PM

Will do

Fishman007 11-05-2013 06:55 PM

Doing a wc right now and 1 of the kuhli loaches got sucked right up into the vaccum :( after 3-4 seconds i saw it and released it.

Fishman007 11-05-2013 07:05 PM

Did a 15% wc. Hopefully that will help them

Fishman007 11-05-2013 07:06 PM

Just lost 1 of the 2 neons :(

Ayi 11-05-2013 08:24 PM

I think starting a new thread would be best. You could probably get more replies. Bit you should do 25%.

Aquarium Girl 11-06-2013 06:34 AM

Did 50% WC on 15 gal QT. Finally got my refund for a dodgy tank that was supposed to have been brand new and checked out a new LFS - nice healthy looking fish but the prices were horrendous. No thank you!!!

jtez 11-06-2013 06:45 AM

Scrubbed some DW I collected and started drilling holes in it hopefully it helps waterlog it quicker, as well as providing planting spots :)

Playing around with some sump ideas, not quite sure how I'll use it yet.

50% WC on my girlfriends 4gal betta tank, trying to get the water clear while cycling

Fishman007 11-06-2013 10:34 AM

Got all the remaining fish from the 20g (3 kuhli loaches and male GBR) into a bucket with an airstone and all the live plants, siphoning the tank atm, ram stopped swimming and 1 eye popped out. Lost the last neon this morning and the kuhlis are almost dead. Took out all decor from the tank and am going to buy new sand for the tank. Gonna scrub the decor and make new water. Starting my 10g QT for the clown goby from the 37g reef.

I live in Hawai'i, you got it! Pretty good fishing spot too, lots of reef fish. Good eating too. I can't do it tho. I can only eat them. It's kinda painful to watch them get tossed out of the water. And I don't have SW tanks.

& Yes it is a type of damsel. In hawaiian we call it Mamo

You should try salt, not actually that hard once youve got what you need! All you really got to buy is an RODI system (depending on if you have chloramines in your water it wont be cheap but unfortuanitly i do) some live or dry rock, instant ocean salt or whatever you choose to get, live sand, a filter, powerheads, a heater, some test kits (hydrometer, and your average ammonia, nitrie, high range ph, nitrate) and unless you wanna do a reef than some normal tank lights. Now this is when your staying nano but when you get to 40s and above it gets harder. If youve got the time than its pretty simple.

Seems legit. I have been pretty busy lately helping out on my grandparents coffee farm. But I do work at my lfs once a week. The owner specializes in SW tanks. I was thinking of turning one of my 10g tanks into BW, And raising some "Opai Ula". Or maybe get a dwarf puffer. I love puffers. Thanks for the info!

lol I work so much, that I barely have time for my tanks anymore, but when I do have time to spend with them, I tell everyone not to bother me. And my fish time xD "Opai Ula" is a type of brackish shrimp here in hawaii. They sell for $5 (20pcs). But I like them a lot. I can catch a whole bunch and just stock my tank;)

Living in hawaii is like living on a giant SW aquarium. With the occasional BW tide pools here and there. Some things we can take from the ocean. But other things require permits. Needless to say, You can have wild caught reef fish;) But coral can not be taken:( we have protected areas.

My brother wanted to set up a grow pond, so he can raise fish to eat. I was going to take a loan out to build a huge pond at my grandparents.

Autumnsky 11-06-2013 11:07 PM

Hi, I am baaaaack!

Vacation was nice.

Changed over my moms tank when I visited her, got her ugly pink blue and green bright gravel to a Eco-Complete with Petrified Wood stone and Malaysian DW, Java Moss, Bolbitis fern, other plants and 2 Dwarf African Frogs. It looks very pretty now. Her 3 fish died, I think because of the pH change, even though I tried to gradually acclimate them.

When I got home I did immediate pwc on almost all the tanks.

My Betta is doing so much better, all healed up (blind in one eye) but has a white spot left on his head, I am watching it to see what it could be, scar or nasty parasite or ??? He is in a Chi tank and the blue mystery snail crawled out, found him dried and dead. The tiny baby Albino BN Plecos are good. Did two 75% pwc and cleaned the filter.

Koi Angels spawned day before and the eggs are gone today. Going to get them into the other tank this week so they can try to get some privacy for the next one.

Was a little bumpy after coming back, but they are looking good now.

Hoping to finally get my Tangerine Tiger Shrimp next week. Will find out in the next day or two.

Alan79 11-07-2013 04:24 AM

Added a black background to a 20G that allows me to see the plants a lot better than against the wall. I plan to make a DIY HOB filter which will hide behind it. Dug up some clay from the yard to mix with my potting mix for a second 20G. Checked out a number of nice DIY ideas that i can use with my tanks. 30% water change on a tank i have on a fish in cycle.

I also noticed that my big Comet had some white lumps on his head and front fins which had me worried. I found out that it's all good though. He's just reached maturity. I need to find him a bigger home soon.

The local chinese shop has a small pond and they would take him, but they overstock that pond and usually go through fish very quickly. Another option is to release him into a large local pond that already has a load of Comets and Koi. He would become anonymous in there very quickly though and he's a really friendly fish now so i'm reluctant to let him go there too. It is probably the best option though.

Fishlover3578 11-07-2013 02:46 PM

Traded my 2 large killifish males for females so I hve 1 small male and two small females . They already are trying to mate and lay eggs

With that much sand and a low filter intake, it might be a good idea to place a sponge prefilter over the filter intake to reduce the amount of sand that gets into the filter. It may cause premature wear to the impeller (ranging from noise to complete stoppage).

Yeah it was me. Not many people keep them and I don't know why. I plan on eventually keeping some coral red pencilfish:

Or some purple pencilfish:

But that's way down the road because they are very delicate and expensive.

To stay on topic, I turned the lights on and fed some frozen bloodworms. Everyone is happy and healthy.

Man! Those are stunning for FW! Better than any cardinal ive seen! (cardinals are small saltwater schooling fish)

I moved my three corys from the small tank where they've been quarantined, to my larger tank. I did not want to net them -- I lost on just after I bought them due, I think, to clumsy netting.

So I moved them with a bottle-trap. It worked like a charm. The trick is to bury the open side a little in the gravel. Then pop, pop, pop! Instant success :)

Nearly caught my snail too :)

The two corys I've already got - they must be about three years old now - seem SO happy to have companions. They came out of hiding immediately to greet the newcomers and everyone seems happy.

Next time I'll use a bottle that's not pinched in the middle (less chance of escape) and I'll put in less bait. One whole pellet was way too much.

Good job, it is wonderful when a plan comes together!

I filled all the tanks for evaporation and checked on all the inhabitants. It seems all is well. Fed and turned on the lights.

Still havent found out :(. Just gonna try and do everything right when i redo it i think it may have been the polyfill, i always washed it out but someone on here (not gonna say any names) told me its fine, the stuff is 100% polyester, no additives or preservetives... So this one time i didnt wash it out... Could be somthing i missed, but it says theres nothing in it. Back to topic got the 10g QT on to the stand, now i am gonna drain 10g from the the tank and fill it up with brand new saltwater. Got my RODI unit setup! The clown goby hasent been eating and has gained alot of specks/bumps :(

Nothing much. Fed the fish. Tried something different with the shrimp; placed the algae wafer in a corner that gets minimal current. The idea is to minimize food scatter. When the shrimp eat, they eject food particles. With a decent current, the particulates go who knows where. I think it would be more efficient if the particles settled near the feeding area. More food eaten; less waste.

Found out that my RODI unit didnt come with a DI unit... Im kinda pissed at lfs now... 245$ down the drain...

Found a dead Berried Cherry Shrimp. Did a 30% pwc and removed the dead one of course. The rest of them are looking fine. Though there was a dead half grown juvenile one about 3 weeks ago before I left on my trip. I am hoping there isn't something bad going on.

Got a black background for my 20 gallon. I got tired of the old one. Also, moms 10 gallon is very closed to finishing out its cycle.

Reaper216 11-09-2013 02:10 AM

Found a bunch of Seachem matrix, matrix carbon, API phoszorb and some marineland rite-size foam sleeves all on clearance for $1 or $2 a piece. Couldnt pass it up

Also battling an Ich problem, only my GBR has it. Everyone else is swimming around fine and have shown no signs. Time will tell.
