When I'm sure that one is not going to make it, I boil a pot of water. It's over in about a quarter of a second.

Flushing is so wrong. The fish can live for hours or days that way.

If you plan on adding a sump/fuge at some point, it would be better to do it now if you plan on using an internal overflow. If you're comfortable with a HOB overflow, then no worries down the road.
