I have done rams and Rasboras before ... also Rams and Dwarf rainbowfish. They seem to have made clear and distinguished territories from what I have seem. Never had any issues with them at all

Why not do a shellie tank ... you could easily house 3 N. Ocellatus in a 10 gallon with lots of shells (1 male 2 females) .. you could even MAYBE do it like 1 male, 1 female and a small synodontis...
