I think it will make a difference. You do need a source of nitrogen. My current tank is fishless and I've been using the separate KNO3 solution.
Make sure you limit the light.

I'd drop the light duration down to 5 maybe 6 hours. That is a strong light on a small tank. From what Ive gathered, the PAR can range from 70 to over 90 depending on what area it's being measured....
