Have you considered angel fish? I keep German blue rams with angelfish in community..... if your interested in gouramis, pearl gouramis do well with both angle fish and Bolivians in a community...

I've never had an issue with angle fish eating my schooling fish. I've always liked serpae tetras and lemon tetras. One of my favorites is rummynose but they are more expensive.
