Hyposalinity treatment affecting bacteria cycle in QT?

At this point, for about 4 days now, I've added enough ammonia to get 5ppm, and within 24 hours it's going back to zero (both ammonia an nitrite). I guess I don't need to increase it any further.

Hyposalinity treatment affecting bacteria cycle in QT?

Hello. I want to run something by the experts here, mostly for a sanity check. TL;DR, two tangs died suddenly in my quarantine tank and I suspect it's because the hyposalinity treatment I did affected the cycle-bacteria in the tank, causing ammonia poisoning. I'm wondering if this is...

    Quarantining Angels

I think you may have missed something, there are no fish currently in the QT tank. ...is it possible that that the dechlorinator failed and hurt the beneficial bacteria enough to cause an ammonia spike, but not enough to totally wipe it out? The ammonia levels are going down much faster than...

    Quarantining Angels

An update: I had the angels in QT for about 3 weeks. I didn't mediate or do hyposalinity. I originally had a barrier between the two of them, but the smaller one was squeezing through a pretty small hole, and it looked like he was just going to hang out with the bigger one -- they seemed to be...

    Quarantining Angels

Thanks for the responses :fish2: So just to make sure, hyposalinity is OK to do with Angelfish? With tangs, I just start hyposalinity treatment as a preventative measure even if I don't see any signs of parasites (yet) -- I recall that hyposalinity doesn't really cause that much stress to...

    Quarantining Angels

Hi, This Friday I'll hopefully be picking up two angel fish for my FOWLR tank -- a flame angel and an emperor angel. I already have a quarantine tank set up for them, but I've never had angel fish before so I wanted to make sure there wasn't anything I was missing. I've quarantined tangs before...

    sump pump too strong

Thanks for your help, last night I bought some parts and installed them, I allowed the PVC cement to cure overnight and tested it out this morning. It seems to work well. Here are a couple of pictures from the project, including one with a little helper :)...

    sump pump too strong

Yeah so when I said "check valve" it turns out what I meant to say was "ball or gate valve" and "check valve" means something completely different that I wasn't trying to say. The return nozzle I crafted from PVC using my Dremel works great so a check valve isn't necessary.

    sump pump too strong

I have a 150G saltwater tank, and I just put together a beautiful plumbing system with my sump and refugium behind a wall in the unfinished part of the basement. It's working nicely except for one thing: my pump is too strong. I just moved and I used to use flexible tubing, it turns out that...

Free: Finding a good home for my fish

I would perfer not to ship them, but if nobody local is interested (which is the case so far) then I would consider shipping them as long as I didn't have to pay shipping. I suppose I should look up how much it costs to ship fish. I've never done this before -- are there AA-approved methods for...

Free: Finding a good home for my fish

There are about 20 tetras total. There are Priscilla Tetras, Popcorn Tetras (these are albino Priscilla tetras -- looks like nobody calls them that except the place I got them from), and Candy Cane Tetras, about an equal number of each (it's tough to get an exact count because there are lots of...

Free: Finding a good home for my fish

So I got engaged recently, and my fiance is going to be moving into my house to live with me soon. One of the things that needs to happen is that I want to re-imagine one of my fish tanks. I have a 55G Freshwater tank that I'd like to make into a nano reef some day, and this will make more room...

    ID something in shrimp tank

I'm working on it :-) She doesn't seem to mind the same things in my SW tank so that's a start. Maybe she was creeped out because we thought it might have been a mayfly or something.

    ID something in shrimp tank

I'm glad to hear they're harmless to the tank, however they do seriously creep out my g/f so I'll probably be getting a guppy or two for the tank to take care of them.

    ID something in shrimp tank

I had suspected it was something like that, thanks for your help. Do you think a guppy (adult) or two could handle these things popping up?
