Bottom-dwellers that will do well with my rough gravel?

Just checking back in here to say that I haven't yet undertaken the substrate change challenge. Someone I know who keeps a lot of planted tanks warned me the plants don't grow quite as well in sand, or at least they don't grow quite in the same way. She said that my plants would rely more on...

And just to double-confirm, plants grow OK in sand?

Bottom-dwellers that will do well with my rough gravel?

I have espei rasboras and Trilineatus corys and will be adding black neon tetras. I'm starting to panic that the sand sitting on top of the gravel will encourage trapped gasses down in the gravel. Should I just plan for a total substrate change at some point and forget this half and half plan?

Bottom-dwellers that will do well with my rough gravel?

I guess the thing I worry about is what if the mini-cycle went longer than 30 hours? I was reading on another forum how this person's mini-cycle went for almost 2 weeks. Not that my QT wouldn't be a safe place, but I'm sure my fish would be a little stressed.

Bottom-dwellers that will do well with my rough gravel?

So I've heard stories that people have had to deal with mini-cycles when switching out substrate. A few questions: - would it be smart to do this change in sections to avoid a mini-cycle? I'm thinking in total I would remove 1/2 to 2/3 of the gravel I have in there now (I've got a good 2-3...

Is there such thing as black aquarium sand? I kind of like the dark look I've got going in my tank.

Lynda, tell me about your substrate- is it half sand/half gravel? Did you start out with it that way? How do plants do in that? I always assumed if I tried to put sand on top of the gravel that it would just sift down through the gravel over time. I suppose I could still have a mini cycle if I...

I added a dark gray backing to the tank and it looks much better.

    Hello from Ohio

New to fishkeeping and plant keeping, so I have quite a project going on, but all is going well so far. Tank has been cycled since mid-May, I have 8 espei rasboras and 4 trilineatus corys in there now. I may have to rehome the corys- I think my gravel is too rough for their delicate little...

Bottom-dwellers that will do well with my rough gravel?

I have 4 trilineatus corys in my 30 gallon. I learned only after I got them that they're meant to live in environment with sand or at least smooth pebble. I have that rough lava-like EcoComplete gravel in there. :( I'm keeping an eye on them, but if I start seeing evidence of eroding barbels...
