We are moving and don't want to risk moving our fish with us. If anyone would like:
3 Orange Rossboroughs
2 Shrimp (freshwater but not exactly sure what type)
Please PM me.
We can also include some java moss if desired.
I put mine in the foreground and used a few rocks from the substrate to weigh it down. Within a few weeks it attached to the substrate. As it has grown I have repeated the process... pushing the new growth closer to the back of the tank. At this point I've got a nice Java moss carpet over...
lighting is one standard 15 watt bulb, not one specifically for planted tanks.
the algae is dark green and kind of slimy looking (don't know how much that helps)
As far as adding nitrogen... I would rather increase the bioload then add chemical fertilizers. Since my CO2 is on the low side I...
Hi,
I have a 10 gallon tank with:
2 neon tetras, 3 orange lined rasboras, 2 shrimp, and a couple dozen snails(who's ancestors came in with my plants).
The bottom of the tank is about 80% covered with java moss.
Everything had been running smoothly until recently I noticed that algae was...
I've seen a number of posts suggesting that actinic blue lights are useless for freshwater planted tanks... but am wondering if there is empirical evidence that suggests this or is it just because it seems right.
Basically I'm wondering because chlorophyll A absorbs 662nm light(red) and 430nm...
my understanding... WPG is a measure of light(indirectly) per unit of volume, but what actually matters is light per unit of area. since volume is proportional to area^(3/2) not area^1 the WPG rule breaks down at either extreme of the volume range.
After keeping fish for a couple of months we(my wife and I) decided to try out adding some plants to the tank. Our tentative plan is to start with Java Moss and Water Sprite, which (according to plantgeek.net anyway) will grow all right with gravel substrate and are in the low and medium-low...
This may sound a bit silly, but you should also watch your fish... When your levels are getting high your fish will behave differently (e.g. more lethargic, swimming closer to the top).
yeah, I did that.
At this point I'm going to give it a few days, watching for signs of distress, to see if my nitrate level rises. If it doesn't I'll see if I can get my fish store to double check my results.
The nitrate test starts yellow and turns red as the nitrate level increases... it...
I'm finishing up my cycle with 5 (started with 6) small fish in a 10 gallon tank, so IMO all is not lost.
first, you need an ammonia and nitrite test kit.
Test daily for ammonia, and every few days until nitrites appear.
Then test daily for ammonia and nitrites, until your ammonia starts to go...
My ammonia and nitrite tests are liquid reagent, made by Hagen
My Nitrate test is liquid reagent, made by Aquarium Pharmaceuticals
My current bioload is 3 Neon tetras, 2 red-lined rasboras, and 3 small shrimp (added yesterday to take care of the algae).
If the algae could explain the 0/0/0...
quick question.
I set up my (10 gallon) tank around 6 weeks ago. A week or two ago nitrites showed up and now they are gone... I think this means that my tank is finally cycled, but I'm also not seeing any nitrates either. So what I'm wondering if 0/0/0 is a sane reading for an unplanted...
