That's not sand pouring out of there but water. You can make a waterfall with a submersible pump running the water line up the back of piles of rock or you can stack the rock or slate around your current filter to give the appearance of a water fall.
If using a pump, you want it powerful...
Concur it's only diatoms which is not an algae at all. Just keep the plants wiped off as best you can. It generally goes away on it's own in a few months. Phosphate is in your fish food, as well, so don't feed anymore than you have to.
New to the site but not to fishkeeping. I've had freshwater tanks for several years. Currently I only have 2-55's and 1-29 ......two of which are planted. I've been scaling back due to apartment living.

You said you had these guppies 2 years ago and also saw them at the zoo. Believe me, by now they have already been named by the person who discovered or cross-bred them.
