Boesemani Rainbowfish - Submitted by madasafish

Thanks for the great profile Madasafish! I just got six Rainbows and they are now my all time favorite fish. I hope they stay in that rank for awhile. bob :D

plants not pearling - odd reflective film on surface???

Surface scum happens. Old dead matter, or decaying fish. I never had it show up for almost two years but this year it frequents my tank. I hear its normal and no worries. It comes and goes. Supposedly live bearers like Mollies or Swords will skim it away, but my two Swords don't do much for it...

    CO2 Sticky -- discussion

Ahh! What great work by Madasafish. Well done Madasa... and thanks for posting Brian. I wish such had been available for me when I first delved into CO2. Would have saved Rex many answers to my questions. Two thumbs way up! Bob :!:

    Pressurized CO2 - multiple tanks

Corvus, What kind of regulator are you running? I have a Milwaukee all in one. Can that manifold work with the attached solenoid? Also, do you put both tank's lights on the same timer controling the solenoid? I was thinking of getting a second CO2 tank for a new 90 I'm setting up, partially...

What to do with ph monitor?

You'll need to be able to get to the probe to re-calibrate it with buffer solution every month or so. Just keep the Diod in the water and you can submerge it, I believe, tho I don't own one. Near the intake is fine is my guess. You can get some suction cups (four in a pack) from Big Als for...

    Where did my KH go?

As I noted in the other post, many folks with pressurized CO2 tanks keep some calcium carbonate in the cannister filter to maintain depleted KH from CO2 injection. Every few months you have to replace it. Maybe half to 3/4 cup of crushed coral, oyster shells or the like... for a bigger 90 gallon...

How Much CO2 to Start with in a 90 Gallon Planted Tank

You may need to occasionlly add a little crushed coral or oyster shell material to your cannister filter to replenish depleted CC and KH if you ever decide to run your pH in the mid to high 6 pH which plants love. Usually a half cup of CC material will do it. Of course, all this depends upon...

    Black/purple dots of algae?

If its BBA, aka Black Brush Algae, and that was my first suspicion when I read your first post, the only known cure/control is going pressurized CO2 with an inline reactor and keeping your CO2 at or near 30ppm. The reason one needs to go pressurized is that DIY CO2 can never get up to 30ppm...

Making the switch from high to low

I think with 3 or 4 inches of substrate on a 24 inch high tank, that the 72 watts might be a bit high but not off the charts for medium light. I bet the 56 watts would work pretty well. I have one 55 watt AH Supply PC on a 26 bow (very similar size) which is a mediumish light tank. And if you...

    Red plants

Yeah, that German MIRO reflector will make the difference, is my guess.

    Red plants

I would say the most important component to getting your bright reds back is wattage per gallon. I have only 55 watts of AH Supply on my 26 bow and the Altenanthera reineckii pink is red as a christmas poinsetta. But AH supply lights are 60% brighter than most big name brands like Coralife...

Which PC model for large tank?

I'm in the same boat ... as I am contemplating a 90 or a 120 or a 110 tall etc. and having fun researching lights. Unfortunately with a tall aquarium, I may need to go metal halide and I found a pair of 150 watt PFO brand pendants at marine depot...
