You going fresh or saltwater? When buying used tank, check corner seals which are silicone if they look smooth without missing pieces. Holds water.

cut pump & skimmer together..with smart plug.

I set it up so it's just above my sump water, when the chamber fills up it flows out to the sump water. I have tried both ways., and this way seems best for me..

should the unit sit just above the water in the sump, so gravity pulls the the water out of filter, then down into sump water?

if he was mine and all the water testing was good, I would just wait, the damage to him from the high nitrates, ammonia could of made him sick, I don't know. Wait and see..I would skip feeding him, maybe every other day. If you were close to me i could give more cichlids for free. sorry I can't...

nitrates under 40 ppm is considered good, nothing above that.. is your cichlid a large fish, maybe your dumping to much food in the tank..

did you test your water your putting in for nitrates? Post a picture of your tank so I can see inside..

retest the tank water, if ammonia & nitrates are high, water change, test the water your using to do water changes, you need to get the ammonia down, how many fish in the 65 gal?

You are using a drop test like API for testing correct?

new tank, return it...I see you picked it up....I wouldn't trust it, I do have a 125 that i silicone glass over 2 openings..

I use the insulation board for homes, to set the tank on, this will even out any stress points on the surface the tank is on, it's Styrofoam..

move the air stone somewhere else, so the water doesn't gather on the lid..
