I dont know if you strained it or soaked it before you added ot to the tank or not but based on my experience my first tank i added dry and capped with gravel...i noticed that everytime i added a new plant anytime i exposed the soil it exploded into my water. I experimented with the second tank...

Thats all i ever use so i can just say why i like it. I think it looks better. Ive heard that its easier for plants to root in gravel then sand and gravel allows the roots to breath. Using sand ive heard that methane gas can be created under the substrate and can be harmful to the fish...
