Betta and axie? Not as ill advised as it sounds.

Also a homemade divider out of mesh may be dangerous for the axolotl, depending on the size of the holes. Any jagged edges could rip their skin or gills very easy.

I would do two tanks just pick one set up to start with since money is tight. I have 2 juvenile axlotls in a 30 and they are pretty active sometimes. They use the whole length of the tank and seem to enjoy it. Plus they can get a foot long, that 15 gallon section wont house one happily for long.

    29 gallon craigslist steal!

Thanks! I hope it all goes well. I'll probably get rid of some rock to free up some space. And hold off on converting to a reef until I get the hang of this. Anyone have any lists or suggestions for 29 gallon stock so I can start my research?

I have a hydrometer and a saltwater api test kit from another craigslist buy. Didn't need them then but once again they were a good deal so I bought them "just in case" lol

    29 gallon craigslist steal!

Thank you :-) I know nothing about saltwater but I knew I wouldnt get another chance at an established tank so cheap so I HAD to get it. Its got a 20-40 Hob filter with bioballs and a sponge in it. I added some polyfill to help clear the water. I kept the media wet. We transferred all the rock...

    29 gallon craigslist steal!

Just picked up a 29 gallon saltwater with EVERYTHING including 50+ lbs of live rock for 100$! :-) The guy was just tired of the maintenance & wanted to sell quick. He gave me a huge 10 gallon bucket of extras that I havent even gone thru yet. This is my 1st saltwater so im a little overwhelmed...

Id say if you want to keep everything healthy the test kit is needed. A small amount of ammonia or nitrite can be deadly if you dont know its there you wont be able to fix it. The kit is pretty expensive in some stores but I think on amazon its around 20$. And you get alot of testing out of it...

Cycling a tank isnt an exact science everyone has their own process! If you dont already have one you should pick up an api test kit.

Have you tried live plants with them? On the pirahnafury forum there are quite a few planted tanks! I guess they dont always eat them :-)

if you look under my posts I started a thread about cycling a tank with used media. Towards the end is a good link to help you with the cycling that way. I cycled my 90 gallon in less than a week with used filter media. But it all depends on your BB build up.

Pellets if theyre high quality are fine for piranha. You could occasionally feed frozen food juat for variety. Theres an online forum called piranhafury with a ton of info

As far as the underground filter I dont think that counts much for filtration. HOB and canisters are a matter of preference. I have both kinds and while the canisters are pretty silent I think I actually prefer the HOB for ease of maintenance and cleaning.but thats just me! So youve had exodon...
