I am going away for a few days (4-days), on a business trip, across the country. I was wondering if my fish will be OK without food?

Right now, i'm leaning towards Oscars. The fact that they have a personality and greets you, makes them more interesting IMO.

It depends. If the pH, temperature etc... is exactly the same, then it's safe. Also, as long as there is sufficient good bacteria in the filter, and it's not harmed when doing water changes, then it's safe. Having said that, I wouldn't do a 100% water change. I would do several 50% water...

YES! They are basically tropical Goldfish! From my experience, they poop just as much as plecos.

I think a well-planted freshwater setup >>>>>>> saltwater. Saltwater setups are more colorful. But a FW setup can look just as impressive if done correctly.

Not hard per se. They just require a bit more STRICT maintenance. Discus are sensitive fish. And they cannot tolerate poor water quality, unlike hardy fish. So you have to be a little more dedicated if you want to keep them healthy and thriving.
