Basically, it's a good guideline for smaller fish but it's silly when people follow it as if it's some kind of law. For example, I used to have 4 mollies (about 3" each) in a 10 gallon and they were just fine.

Now the temp is reading 1 degree or so below what it was earlier. The only thing I can think of is that the thermometer isn't dead-on anymore and that the water was a little colder than what they are used to. They are now moving around the tank but still not as hyper as normal.
