Newly bought emersed Java Fern introduced to tank. Need to inject CO2 and add Excel?

Hi guys, For the past 2 weeks, my tank was taken over by BBA. I tried to clean it up by spraying Excel directly onto the java fern leaves but only managed to burn the leaves and turned them brown. I cut off the dead leaves, leaving only the rhizome but still the algae took over. So I removed...

    Java Fern turning brown. Dying?

Hi guys. My tank has been running for about 3 months now. It is stocked with 5 zebra danios 6 harlequin rasboras 4 neon tetras 2 otos About a month ago, I thought that my tank had an attack of diatoms as the glass was covered by rust coloured algae but I managed to clear them by using an...

    Forget this! I'm done

Hi, please do not give up! I also did a fishless cycle and I took 6 months, yes! 6 months to cycle! I had a whole host of problems, pH crashes, total BB die off, soft water, the whole works. Now after the experience, I know what to do, also with the help of helpful people like librarygirl and...

The (almost) Complete Guide and FAQ to Fishless Cycling

Btw, I am a teacher so I get my ammonia source ftom my school chemistry lab. It is very dilute though so I do need to add quite an amount to reach 4ppm.

The (almost) Complete Guide and FAQ to Fishless Cycling

Hi librarygirl, the nitrates is from the conversion of nitrites. Could it be from lack of oxygen? I do have a bubble wand in my tank running though. For water changes during cycling, do I do a 50% WC or 90% WC.

According to other aquarists in Singapore, they have tested the water and ammonia is present in the water at about 0.25 ppm.

The (almost) Complete Guide and FAQ to Fishless Cycling

Hi guys, It has been 5 months since I have started fishless cycling and to me it has just been a thankless chore, it is still not done! After 5 months! One of the issues is that I have very soft water coming from Singapore, from the tap it is 7.0 but after a few days it will drop to 6.6. I...

The (almost) Complete Guide and FAQ to Fishless Cycling

Hi there librarygirl, an update here. I did a 90% WC before I seeked the advice of the guys here. Now, instead of processing 1.75ppm of ammonia a day, it has dropped to 1ppm per day. It seems that everytime I do a WC, it slows down the cycling process. But sometimes I am forced into it as my pH...

The (almost) Complete Guide and FAQ to Fishless Cycling

Hi there again! I have taken librarygirl's advice and have been dosing ammonia to 2ppm. Even then after 24 hrs, there was 0.25ppm of ammonia still present in the tank. So I did a 90% WC yesterday and vacuumed brown stuff off the top of the gravel as I saw too many nematodes and planaria around...

The (almost) Complete Guide and FAQ to Fishless Cycling

During the nitrite spike and when it was coming down, the ammonia only dropped to mostly 0.5ppm - 1ppm. I have never seen it go to zero. Dont really know why. I will try your suggestiion librarygirl, thanks for the advice. Although I will be going away for about a week or so in 2 days time. Will...

The (almost) Complete Guide and FAQ to Fishless Cycling

Yup, it drops from 3 -4 ppm to 1ppm in 24 hrs. Nitrites were evident, from more than 5ppm to clear baby blue now. Just that the ammonia is not dropping to zero at all, even after 90% water changes and dosing up again. pH is always at 6.8 last I checked, even after 90% WC.

The (almost) Complete Guide and FAQ to Fishless Cycling

Hi there, its me again. And yes, my tank is till not cycled, 3 MONTHS since I started! Don't know what is wrong but the NH3 just does not seem to go down to zero after dosing to 3ppm - 4 ppm. After dosing to 4ppm, after 24 hrs it'll go to 1ppm then another 24 hours later, without dosing it'll...
