Normally you can gender these little guys at 4 inches (shell length) by their cloaca, tail and their nails like you mentioned. What length is your RES? Personally, I have a two year old 4 inch YBS, 'he' still baffles experts and vets etc :)

I have kept shrimp with ramshorn snails brilliant for the past few years, my rams only ever eat a moult from the shrimp or a fish/shrimp that is actually already dead.

They are brilliant climbers, they can easily climb up cables/wires. They should be ok without a filter, as long as you change it every few days like you suggested. 13 degrees is a bit low but they should be fine in it, they may slow down a bit however.

Oh and crazygrammy, do you know how to check if your platies are male or female? So you can make sure if you are buying any more that they are female. But Samzter is correct on saying that they can store sperm, so fingers crossed you get no more surprises :)

Typical store person imo, you get a few good ones though. It's simple really, check when they're in the tank, find a male, catch that specific one then double check it in the bag :D but some of them don't know so it's better to ask for a specific fish so you know you're getting what you want :)...
