    itchy fish?

After long research I have determined that... There is NO consensus on this subject  Mr Hargreaves says freshwater dip for Ick and Velvet, but it will kill a fish with Brooklynella. Dr Fenner (I found out he is a veterinarian) recommends Freshwater dip for all three protozoans...

    PWC during cycle??

With any non overstocked tank, the bacteria level will eventually rise to the match the waste load of the tank. That is the reason one does not want to add too many fish at once: The bacteria need time to "catch up" to the waste produced by the fish. If running a fishless cycle, you don't...

help this was attached to my yellow tang.

So much for my idea of putting ammonia in the tank to reduce the water quality enough to kill the inverts. Anything that will kill a cirolanid would do in an anemone in a heartbeat!. :(

Can you use decorations in a saltwater tank?

And now, a word from the other side... I have the original tacky tank. No corals, no live rock, and everything in my tank (with the exception of the 4" of aragonite) is artificial. Resin branch coral, resin rock arch (I may replace it with a copy made from a piece of base rock and...

Help plant or seaweed taking over

I like green algae, but I bet with the live rock you are trying to grow coralline algae. Time to reduce the nitrates, change any old flourescent bulbs, and increase the cleanup crew of algae eaters (cerith snails, nerite snails, red legged hermit crabs, etc)

    itchy fish?

My Keyhole Angel (bad choice for my tank in more ways than one) and yellowtailed damsel didn't have the cloud around them when Brooklynella came for them. They just laid on their side and died about 6 hours later. I didn't know what had hit them until my poor little ocellaris clown got it last...

    itchy fish?

Is your Quarentine tank bare bottom? He might be flashing, which could be a symptom for either Velvet or Brooklynella. If it is Brooklynella, the poor thing is probably dead by the time you read this. If it is Velvet, you can try hyposalinity and/or copper to kill the parasite. A "shiny"...

Fish still dieing. HELP, need more input!

Here is a thought - a disease with vauge or rapid symptoms. in less than 72 hours, Brooklynella ( a dinoflagellite scourge) wiped out my 20 gallon tank that had been set up for 9 months. However, it left the camel shrimp completely untouched. Brooklynella is known for attacking Angels...

Which is better, the True Perc or the False Clownfish???

Ocellaris Clownfish are in the genus Amphiprion along with Percula Clownfish (Amphiprion percula), Maroon Clownfish (Amphiprion tricinctus) and every other clownfish with the exception of the spine-cheek anemonefish (Premnas biaculeatus). source: The Complete Book of the Marine Aquarium by...

    Algae question

I LUV Green Algae! I Wish my entire back glass were coated. The Green stuff will use the nitrates in your tank for food, which is why you have been able to get away with not changing water for so long. If you truly wish to get rid of it, reduce nitrate sources and change your lighting. To...

Which is better, the True Perc or the False Clownfish???

Why do people call the species a "False Percula"? No one calls a Basset hound a "False Beagle"! Ocellaris Clowns Rule! :band:

    Something besides sand????

My favorites are for small book, "Setting Up a Salt Water Aquarium" by Gregory Skomal and for Big Books, I use "The Complete Book of the Marine Aquarium" by Vincent Hargreaves and "Dr. Burgess's Mini Atlas of Marine Aquarium Fishes". Neither are as preachy as "Conscientious Marine Aquarist."...

    nervous to buy another fish

Go for a Clown Goby! Cute, tiny fish, perches on structure and watches the tank like it owns the whole thing 8)

    Something besides sand????

If you are not going to use sand, I must disagree with lando and say go ahead and install the undergravel filter. Just don't rely on it as your primary filter. I run both a UGF and a cartrige filter (Peguin 125 with biowheel, carbon 24/7), and I am ordering my protien skimmer this week. No...

    Reef vs FOWLR

Go Fish Only!!!! We need some more non-coral folks on this board :P Seriously, without corals, nitrates are much less of an issue, you don't have to worry about lighting, dosing calcium and nutrients, feeding plankton, and wondering if that critter you had your eye on is REALLY "reef-safe"...
