The substrate is pool filter sand. I also used lava rock in mesh bags to build up the hills. I also got a bag of aquarium pebble type substrate, and put some of that in for some contrast.

Thanks for the quick reply! The tank is getting 12 hours of light from my light bar, and is located in my living room. It doesn't get any direct sunlight on the glass, but gets indirect sunlight from curtains being open. So maybe I need to dial back the time the light is on? Do the fish care...
