Yes it can happen while cycle starts just ride it out do your normal water changes clean the glass like normal start a log of your testing readings and compair them and you should be fine
I use silica sand and have had no problems with it at all it is very fine but I use a sump system on my 110 gal tank and I haven't had any get caught in the the sump

The best thing to do for drift wood is to boil it in good clean water look for any water color change if it changes color empty and repeat till no change and your good to go
