    Diatoms/Brown algae?

Just an added note on cleanup crews. Cerith, nassarius, astrea, and marginatta snails are my personal favorites. Turbo's will work but they cannot right themselves when overturned they die. As for hermits I love the look of scarlet reef hermits but they are not a gregarious species and will...

    Moving a Tank

Mix up 10 - 15 gallons of saltwater mix at new location, PH and heater for 24 hours. On the home front - syphon out 4 buckets 1/2 full each. Take out all sessile inverts and store in a bucket or two. Then begin removing LR and placing it into 2 buckets. Now pull out rocks with anemones and...

    Problems with corals

That's a great book - I have it in my collection too. Good luck, proceed slowly as you are doing - Remember "nothing good ever happens fast in a saltwater system." It's a adage that was drummed into my head. Well today is water change and maintainance day for me so have work to do. Keep...

    Problems with corals

Obmanta - if you go about it as we deicussed earlier in the thread yes you may just add as affordable. Secret is - when you first drain off water from main display - place all rock and corals in large tub with heater and PH's. Add fish and inverts if you have to (I like keeping them seperate)...

    Bilogical cycle & Live Rock

Wecome! Q1 - No adding live rock in intervals won't really mess up the cycle only legthen it. Even when you purchase cured live rock it is shipped out of the water and some die off (even at bacterial) will occur. Q2 - Cloudiness - could be dormant critters in live rock becoming active. Many...

How much current do you guys have?

Manufacturer ratings on all pumps and Power heads in my 210 display = 7500 g/hr. I personally believe via experience that unless your tank is swirling like water going down a toilet you can never have too much flow. However you can have too little.

    nitrate

Nitrates. Four month old 90 gallon - stocked - and running with 20 on nitrates. Think about what a water change does. If you take out half the volume of water in your tank, and replace it with new saltwater with zero nitrates you will still be left with a nitrate level of 10 ppm. So if you...

film on top of my water

I have to agree, if your have a surface sheen of excess waste material you are not getting effective skimming. By adding a surface skimmer to the pump that runs your skimmer you should then take care of the problem. You might ask yourself why do I have a build up on my surface! Nine times out...

    Problems with corals

Okay, simple facts - 125 gallon tank, 175 lbs live rock, CC substrate, corals withering and not doing well, Ammonia 0, nitrite 0, nitrate at 200, pH at 7.8. specific gravity at 1.020, think I saw temp was low also, and you are using a wet/dry filter. Get ready to learn something! You cannot...

Best type of protien skimmer for 180gal

Any "skimmer" can be either in sump or attached to sump. He asked which was preferred. Corallife 225 I use can be either in or attached (HOB) - Euro skimmer same way and both are for a 225 capacity.

Newbie to SW. Here's my plan... is it right or wrong?

If setting up an aggressive FOWLR is great. Forget the crushed coral though. Lion fish and puffers big appetites = big poops! CC will merely trap this. Sand bed and live rock will help break down load. Skimmer is a must. I love my corallife super skimmer. The two larger sizes (125 / 220)...
