I used live ocean rocks in my 337 gall fresh water tank... what i did was soak them entirely in plain tap water for a few weeks then i used a high power pressure washed to take any salt water coral still on it and to wash the salt off then put it in my tank i was able to cycle my tank with fish...
alright so the back story is 337 gall fresh water aquarium. been using tap water from my city my water is around 6.5 to 8 ph water hardness is less then 100. I use pond declorinator to treat my water.

The problem with micro tanks for people new to fish tanks is that it is harder to manage the water and could wake up to all dead fish in the morning i would get atleast a 20 gallon as it is actually easier to care for then a 5 gallon aquarium and the best part is you can put More fish in it.

first question was the gravel wet? live was the tank working when u got it .... live fish were in it?
because if so the gravel has good bacteria in it that is helping your tank with cycling
