I would just add 2 or 3 fish. You should see a mini cycle while the bacteria builds up to eat the new ammonia, once ammonia and nitrites go back to 0 add a few more. Just my opinion and how I stocked my tank.
I just did a Sunsun 703b and absolutely love it! Picked it up for around $70 on ebay. Make sure whatever canister you get, watch the YouTube video from pondguru on supercharging your canister filter.
One way to avoid this all together is get one of those 5 gallon jugs that fit on top of water coolers. You can get them filled with clean purified water for less than $2 a jug at walmart. Since your tank is 29 gallon, one jug would be about a 20% water change and it won't matter what the water...
I have a fully grown GKF with neons and he doesn't bother them. Just don't feed him anything alive. I like to mix up Ken's shrimp sticks, earthworm sticks and blood worms
Definetly worth the investment, makes water changes very easy! One tip, I put a small piece of tape on the side of my aquarium to mark 25% so I know where to stop taking water out during water changes.

Do you have a tube for him? They like to stay in a closed in space. Also if you just got him they take a few days to warm up to the tank before eating. Here is a picture of my knife. [ATTACH]296483
