    Zoas/palys identifications

Went to the LFS to pick up 3 ricordea I got via Facebook auction and couldn't resist their end of year 25% off plus then buy 3 get 3 free in the $20 frag tank ;) So, 6 good sized frags for $45, but struggling on IDs. After slowly acclimating them and giving them a couple of hours with the lights...

Chip repair options on Marineland 220g

After a number of months waiting for a non-ridiculously priced Craigslist deal, I picked up Marineland Corner-Flo 220g (72"x24"x30" lwh). The seller had been installing custom granite surround around the new tank when a piece of granite bumped the tank. The owner requested a replacement tank to...

    Ecopico Leds

Zeroblake - When you say the colors don't come across great without adding extra LEDs, did you bump each arm up to 3 strips, and if so would you recommend the 12000k whites, or 453nm blues/12000k whites? I'm really looking at getting this light unit with two additional strips, so trying to...

I really like my high-fin black skirt tetras :)

    My 20 long FOWLR build

I don't think the filter would really cause any salinity issues, but I think with 16lbs of live rock you'd still need some form of mechanical filtration. If you added in additional live rock, maybe you could forgo one, but one of the challenges of a small tank like a 20g is you don't have much...

My black moor like to sit in one corner, is there something wrong?

No problem. As I mentioned, it's good you're already looking towards a bigger and only keeping the one black moor, as as they grow they can put a strain on a small tank as they are, comparatively speaking, quite messy fish and need a larger tank, strong filter, and regular water changes to keep...

My black moor like to sit in one corner, is there something wrong?

He may well just be sleeping then if he's active at other times and water parameters seem fine :) If he's alert when feeding and seems to explore the tank otherwise, keep a good visual eye on him and check water parameters often, as well as keeping up on water changes. 15g should be okay until...

My black moor like to sit in one corner, is there something wrong?

Do you have any other fish in there, and does the black moor show any signs of breathing hard or damage around the gills of fins? What size tank is it, and do you know how your water parameters are, as well as whether the tank was cycled first? If you have any questions about these terms...

    Backup Filter

Further, if you choose to then start up a second or third or fourth tank (give it time ;) ), you can use filter media from your existing 55g tank in the new tanks to help get them cycling much, much faster. Some people keep a piece of filter media in their main tank that they can move to a...

    My 20 long FOWLR build

I tried shrimp once, and the smell can get pretty ripe in just a few days ;) Pure ammonia is probably the quickest and easiest way to kick start things. Not sure on where you live, but Ace Hardware sell a pure ammonia that I use and a number of people here recommend. Seems to be the about the...

    canister filters?

When I switched to the API Filstar XL on my 55g, I left out the HOB that had been running. It makes it look a lot cleaner without it being there, has absolutely minimal noise that way, and it's one less piece of equipment to maintain. A canister shouldn't really have a problem, but is...

    Reef cleaners rock

On the 30lbs I received, I got 8 pieces. I think you can leave a comment for John when ordering to let him know if you have any particular sizes in mind. He seems pretty accommodating, you could PM him on here or e-mail him I guess.

    Reef cleaners rock

Glad you like the rock :) I put around 30lbs of their base rock in to my tank when I started up around 6 months ago and really liked how clean and well-shaped they were. Wish I'd add in a little bit of actual live rock to kick start things, but it came along nicely. Hope your tank works out well!

    Ammonia after new additions?

If the cycle is complete and you were able to track the relevant parameters rise and fall, then adding in a small amount of livestock at a time like that shouldn't cause any spikes. That might be a slight rise, but if you tank is cycled, the live rock and filter media should handle it just fine...

    Confused about my live rock

I've seen bubbles like that on live rock if there's some algae a' brewin. I blow the rocks with a turkey baster before doing a water change to make sure there aren't any sediments building, and since using RO/DI water, I haven't had a problem with algae and bubbles like that. I also adjusted the...
