i think it is because maybe your pleco is scared because maybe u never hav vaccumed your tank. have you?

i wouls say vacumm your aquarium more because your pleco or whatever u had will not eat its own poop so u have to check the bottom when it gets dirt clean it ok I hope my advise will help :D

Like Tetrin said a 10g will be to small for the two. As for the breathing problem this is not a good sign :( pretty much every time I've had a fish doing what you described he was sick and didn't make it. :( I hope that he gets better.
