    Funnest fish for young children?

Thanks for the suggestions everyone! Before starting this post I was slightly inclined towards goldfish - and they seem to be the most popular suggestion. The tank is going to go in the frog room so "supervised visits" are already a prerequisite. But I will probably put the tank higher as...

    Funnest fish for young children?

I now have space available and want to set up a tank specifically for the enjoyment of my two kids (age 2 and 4). I will be setting up and maintaining the tank so I don't need child proof fish. Right now I am thinking of a tank 75 - 125 gallons and set about 12" above the floor. I'm wanting...

Why will cleaning my filter media reduce my nitrates?

I have a few suggestions: 1. Make sure that you are not overfeeding (depending on how you look at it - this is worse than being overstocked) 2. Get a second opinion on your nitrate readings. It is possible that your test kit just doesn't work. 3. Check the nitrates of your tapwater (after...

    Some CO2 trials and tribulations

A lot of folks will only use 1/4 tsp yeast

    Some CO2 trials and tribulations

That seems odd. Going from a pH of 8.3 to 7.6 would mean well under 30ppm of CO2. Do you know if the pH dropped further when your inverts started showing stress? If you mix a CO2 batch with too much yeast it will produce very quickly and over a very short time. How much yeast do add? You...

A tough question on CO2 usage

rkilling1, so the basic jest of what you are saying is that the vast majority of the CO2 you add is absorbed by the plants. Whould I be correct in assuming you have extremely little surface agitation?

    Medium light reds

Yea that is the plant in my avatar. I had trouble keeping it looking the way I wanted it. It will only have a few leaves at a time so you can't really trim too much in order to shape it the way you want it. It also likes to send new leaves to the top of the water. You can trim these off -...

Tiger lotus is a great match, but can be a little hard to aquascape with.

    Leaning Tower of Aquarium

I too was thinking it might be a tack strip under the carpet. Are you planning to put the boards under the front of the stand (on the floor) or the front of the aquarium (between stand and tank)? You don't want them between the tank and the stand. That would put REALLY bad stresses into the...

    Shocked by wife!!!

I'm still trying to convince my wife that we need another tank, and I know the only possible way that it will happen is if the new tank will have "cutsie wutsie wittle baby fishies." But for some reason, she does not think that baby danios need a 210 gallon tank.

Acute evaporation = partial water changes?

Like LWB said, the point of a water change is not to remove water, but to remove the gunk that is in the water. Evaporation leaves all the gunk behind. You may be able to stretch out your water changes - for reasons like live plants, heavy filtration, low bioload - but not because of lots of...

Up to my ears in snails!

I really like MTS. I have 100s of algae eating snails that clean the tank at night and keep themselves hidden during the day.

Large low light centerpiece type plant...

My brother and I have both grown this in low light. My avatar is a tiger lotus grown in 1.5wpg. I think a tiger lotus would be a VERY good choice for a low-light centerpiece.

    Upgrading from Wally world aquatech

Are you planning to add CO2 to your tank? If so you will want to go with a canister filter to limit surface agitation/CO2 loss. If you are not adding CO2, the aquaclear line comes highly recommended. I generally try to get filters rated for roughly twice my tank size.
