You can use Joe's Juice. Everyone seems to like that alternative if adding peppermint shrimp is not an option (non-reef safe tank). Personally, I'd go for the peps. They add more life to your tank (even though they only sway back and forth all day, lol) HTH!

Lando, I have the exact same light schedule as you do. Works well for me. The moonlights (LED's) will run for years without being turned off, and they use very little electricity. If that is still a concern, you can put them on timers too ;)

Tripper, I would get the Jalli light for the hob fuge. When you do add some type of macro, keeping the lights on overnite ( when your daylights are off) will help to keep the oxygen levels in check. I find that it is common for hobbyists to leave the fuge light on 24/7 , but having them on...

Instead, you could just raise the salinity slowly through your water changes. For instance, when you do your 10-15% water changes, premix your water and have the salinty be near 1.023. That way you could raise it without any drastic changes. The 10-15% would not sway the salinty right away...

Funny, I'm in a very similar situation. I'm in college, renting an apartment, and I did buy the exact same filter. Money was tight for me as well, so I didn't get the extra tank. I don't really think you need it. The GPD rating on that filter is pretty high compared to other ones, so waiting...
