I've got the 404 and use biomax on top, followed by filter floss, then carbon and zeolite, then those octagon shaped ceramic rocks for mechanical & biological filtration. Works for my 65 gal tank quite nicely.
I'm thinking they probably are good for the substrate. Ever since they've appeared, I've been having really clean looking water coming up through the gravel vacuum. I think they're eating up all the waste. The only thing wrong from what I can tell is that my nitrates are up too high. Everything...
I've got a 65 gallon african cichlid tank. When I go to vaccuum the gravel during a water change, I get hundreds if not thousands of really tiny snails coming up into the hose. They are about the size of a ball point pen tip. Is this a bad thing?
I found a solution for this problem in my African tank. The cichlids would kill my pleco in about 3 months. This happened a few times. I even put a big 8" pleco in there, but he didn't last either. The fix was to put 2 new plecos in at once. Aparently this confuses the ciclids because they dont...
Ok, I bought a nitrite and a nitrate tester today. Nitrite levels are next to nothing. Nitrate levels are almost off the charts at about 80 or more. I read that high nitrate levels will cause algea breakouts, which is what my tank looks like it's suffering from. I'll do 25% water changes every...
Amonia is non-existent. I've never used nitrite or nitrate testers, although I wouldn't be opposed to going out to my local shop this afternoon to pick one up if you recommend it.
Ph is 7.2, even though my local water is 8.0. Thats another reason why I took out the driftwood. I thought maybe...
The manufacturer suggests that these things must be changed every 6 months. Does anyone know if this is really necessary? I don't see how these things can go bad. It sounds like something to get you to spend your money again on the product.
The water in my tank is very cloudy and green tinted. This tank has been established for 2 years. No fish are dying or even look sick. This has been going on for a month now. I have done 4 vacuum water changes, 20% to 50% each time. I've used Proquatics water clarifier, Proquatics bacteria...
