Turn off the flash and use a tripod : ) Colors will look more correct plus you won't have that shiny flash reflection on the glass any more.

How do you coat a plywood tank to keep the water from damaging the wood? I want to build a new home for our turtle but am worried about the thing rotting.

I think that would be fine, though things might get a little cramped if the platys have any fry. At the most we had a small Tetra school, two black mollies, and three small clown loaches at the same time - but I think that was too much. We moved them to the new 55G tank at first opportunity...
